Gen 1 Mewtwo can actually lose to him if Mewtwo doesn't carry Fire Blast.

Going to pass Mewtwo vs Mew, if only because there is no proof that they are actually against each other ingame story-wise(sure, they are related, but their "rivalry" only existed in the first movie, which resolved it completely).

After, HG/SS is what led the 'Zard to victory last battle.

Reshiram vs Zekrom is a Gen 5 rivalry, a game that just came out on the dying DS and has the lowest player base by far of the main titles.

HG/SS is a remake of Gen 2. Gen 2 has nostalgia and many people think GSC was the best Pokemon game! Also, Charizard was doing well even before HG/SS, it just helped him boost even further.

Yeah, the only real relevant rivalries among Pokémon are from the later generations. Kyogre/Groudon, Dialga/Palkia, Reshiram/Zekrom.
