I don't get why anybody would prefer Sonic vs. Robotnik over Sonic/Knuckles. It's not even much of a rivalry in the former. Just an unremarkable fatty vs Sonic.

I suppose it could be argued that Shadow is the true villain of the Sonic series, in the sense that his appearance was the moment the series started its nosedive in quality, and only the games without him have been any good since then.
