-Matches will last exactly 24 hours. Votes after that much time has elapsed will not be counted, even if a new topic hasn't gone up yet. -This is a contest to determine which character is the most *powerful*. Vote only for the character you think would win in a fight, not the one who's funnier, cooler, or sexier. If you don't do that I can't count your vote. -BOLD YOUR VOTE. Unbolded votes will NOT be counted. -Rallying is allowed. Alts are not. -Fights will take place in a neutral terrain. This does not necessarily mean a *featureless* terrain: assume that both characters will have a chance to use all of their skills to the fullest here, barring setting-specific abilities and anything that requires the presence of multiple enemies (but see below). -Characters start the fight alone. They don't bring allies with them, like Kerrigan and the Zerg Swarm for instance. Summons are allowed though, provided they're brought once combat has started. -Fighters retain their usual personalities. They won't fight to kill unless that's their MO, and won't spam their best attacks to win unless, again, that's how they act in their original media. -Similarly, fighters are unaware of their opponents capabilities at the start of the fight unless their powers facilitate them information (like knowing all there is to know in the universe - this would include who the opponent is and what he can do, as well as weaknesses) -You don't have to justify your vote, but it helps. If you feel like you can add something to the debate, go right ahead! -Seriously, BOLD THE VOTE. So important it bears repeating. -Bracket Link, for viewing past results and future matches: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?&tid=408528&tclass=
Past Results: In spite of remaining a consistent doubling until the final hours of the match, the battle between Bryan Mills and Twilight Sparkle drew a ton of votes. In the end, however, the gifted pony spellcaster is the third 1-seed to fall. Votals: 10-23.
(4) Accelerator
From A Certain Magical Index, Accelerator is an esper who has the power of vector control. This power can be used in several ways, including redirection of vectors (such as reversing blood flow, ripping off skin, etc.), crushing the earth around him, vector shooting, wind control, plasma storms (created by further compressing wind at a single point), kinetic blasts (by taking control of the planets rotational vectors and transferring energy into an attack - doing this once slowed the earths rotation by about five minutes), brain hacking (redirecting electrical signals allows him to rewrite memories / personality), and flight. He also has an anti-magic field. The redirection ability is passive and occurs at light speed. Accelerator himself is capable of moving at hypersonic speeds (Mach 10), and in his most recent form has tanked an attack that would have destroyed all of Europe and Asia.

(5) New Son gambit
From X-Men, the New Son is a version of Gambit who has unlocked his full potential. As an Omega class mutant, he has incredible powers, having defeated the Dark Phoenix by himself. The New Sun has tremendous mastery of space (but not time), possessing the ability to travel to various universes to prevent other versions of him from ever unlocking their full powers, as well as peering into them. He is capable of controlling kinetic energy down to the molecular level, tapping into anything's potential energy to make it explode, and stop an enemy's motion, or conversely for him to keep moving for as long as he wishes, as well as duplicate various other types of energy (such as causing extreme cold by lowering the amount of kinetic energy in an area).
So yeah. Barring convincing Accelerator arguments, the New Sun cooks him.

Well Accelerator redirects direction, no matter how fast/strong it is. Making energy explode sounds like it doesn't need to be directed though, and this Gambit can just stop motion.
How does New Son Gambit's energy manipulation work? I'm wondering if Accelerator would be able to deflect it.
Also, a note on the writeup -- it says that Accelerator "in his most recent form has tanked an attack that would have destroyed all of Europe and Asia." From prior arguments, I seem to remember that he survived that attack, but was incapacitated afterward for a significant length of time. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

New Son Gambit
Heh, forgot to vote. Also, is it Son or Sun? Also how curious how he beat Dark Phoenix
Both, actually.

IIRC, he killed his Universe's avatar of the Phoenix Force before coming to the main Marvel universe, so it was off-panel. Note that he didn't defeat Dark Phoenix, the title of whom refers to an insane Jean Grey channeling the Phoenix force.
TBH, I sort of doubt he could defeat a prime Dark Phoenix, but any avatar of the PF is pretty powerful.

Well I think the Accelerator could probably brainhack New Son into not wanting to fight him if he could buy enough time.
as for how he'd do that, his powers do offer a lot of control, but New Son has powerful space control that would probably trump anything Accelerator could do to buy time...yeah im not seeing it.
What exactly does the 'make someone explode with potential energy' mean?

If Gambit uses projectiles or tries to melee Accelerator, he can just redirect them. Though I doubt Gambit would get hurt, and the make potential energy explode doesn't sound like it needs direction.

Chant the name of BlAcK TuRtLe, winner of the 2010 Guru Challenge! NEXT TIME!
Needs bolding because normal quoting is a bunch of lol, though it will be counted anyway since this is the site screwing things up.

I guess Gambit wins just because energy isn't a vector.

Well IIRC Accelerator's shields automatically block light, sound, heat, electricity, gravity, radiation, etc.. unless he allows it to affect him (so he could breathe, or hear other people for example). It's why he looks like an albino and doesn't have much muscle mass.
However the way the shield works is that when an attack or wave or particle or whatever gets within a certain range of him, its direction and speed is reversed reflecting the vector of movement 180 degrees. It's pretty much an automatic reflex and works even if he's sleeping or unconscious. Though at the same time the way his ESP was trained by Kihara, this technique was designed with an intentional flaw against attacks that can redirect themselves in the event they needed to subdue Accelerator. Accelerator got the crap beaten out of him by Kihara in season 2, because he knew how his powers worked and their effective range, and pulled his punches at the last possible second so they would be reflected right into Accelerator's face. Not sure if he tried to fix this weakness later on though.
And I don't think his shields would do any good against anything that would manipulate his matter directly. >_>
Another problem is that he's still human and still needs to breathe. I remember it was said in the manga that he could theoretically survive a direct hit with a nuclear weapon with no ill effects. But he'd still be at risk of suffocating to death standing around inside a huge explosion. At least, it came up when Misaka was trying to break down the oxygen in the air to get him to pass out, and he countered by causing a dust explosion.
I can't really say anything about him and his powers past what the anime covers since I haven't read the novels. Though I don't think there's really anything he could do in this situation.

The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons. Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07)
Now if you'll excuse me I'll put Pretty Woman on the playlist and go get the new topic up.
