I'm currently storming through the MGS series for the first time.

So... MGS, MGS2, MGS3 down, now there's just MGS4 left. Good times have been had so far.

Glad to hear it! Though 2 and 3'll be in HD on PS3 and 360 (if you've got those) in a couple months gonna be sweeeet. Also I love the Gamecube remake of MGS, Twin Snakes.

And hey, Peace Walker in November with the collection, 'nother one to throw on there.

MGS4 is good times, my fav game, enjoy oh yes.... in the cardboard box...

I have noticed recently that you are a great user with great opinions.

MGS3 is one of the best games in the history of forever. The thing I love about MGS is that the other three games are also in that category.

While we are ranking the series, I have to say I love Twin Snakes even though everyone else hates it.

I love how goddamn ridiculous it is. In every way. It's like the gameplay and the cutscenes are trying to outdo each other in ridiculousness. Which is hilarious and entertaining.

Best Actual Gameplay - 3 (Subsistence only, otherwise it's 2)
Best Extra Content - 2 (Substance only, obviously)
Best Story - 1 (This one is more subjective than the others, as long as you don't say 4)

My overall ranking: 3>1>=2>4>PW

I do consider PW good enough to mention in the same ranking as the others. Not so much with PO.

Even more subjective than you'd think. =P Throwing 4 under the bus like that. 4's story is top tier. Yes wrapping up everything was a tough task, but by not introducing a bunch of new characters or anything Hideo was able to handle that task beautifully.

Here's how I rank the main games:

4 > 3 > Twin Snakes > 2 > 1

4 and 3 are almost tied, love 'em, best.

If I had to rank just the stories, thats tough. Hmmm, actually, I'd probably rank them the same as the games, well but with Twin Snakes and 1 tied of course.

1 has the best since it set up and finished itself all nice and neatly. 3 elaborates on the backstory for the series really well and also has an interesting short-term plot. 4 has dat ending. 2 is bad but a necessary piece for the series to work.

Gameplay: 3 > 4 > 2 > 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PW
3 just has so much replayability... so many fun things to find out. 4 is just super fun and fluid to play, but feels like there's less secrets to find. 1 is great, but 2 really catapulted the series ahead with its super slick controls... guard AI was still too simple though. PW is just lol. Extremely dumb AI, boring environments, "boss" battles.

The story in 3 is the best, I just love the dynamic between Snake and The Boss, everything about the setting, the characters, the plot twists, the journey from beginning to end, it's just so damn perfect. And it stands very well on its own too.

MGS1 has the second best in terms of story, it also stands well on its own, it has some great characters, a good rivalry, conspiracy, mystery, good plot twists as well, overall a great story.

I really love the story in MGS2, always a fan of anti-censorship messages. It was convoluted as f***, but once you got the details down, it's actually a very nice complex story, full of all the stuff that makes MGS good.

As for MGS4, the story was a bit underwhelming. It was good, and the ending actually made me tear up, and that's the only time a game has ever accomplished that. So props. However, I'm not too fond of the whole "oh lol nanomachines," it seemed either like a cop-out, or just straight up not knowing what else to do. Sad, as I hold Kojima in a higher regard, but I'm not THAT disappointed about it. The story still holds up well, and it's nice to see how all the characters have grown and changed, except some of them for the worse (I kinda wish Johnny would have just remained as a joke). And my biggest problem is how they just always used the syringe, it got annoying.

4's gameplay is only so low because there was so little of it. If they had a lot more gameplay with the Chapter 1/2 stuff, it would've been great. But we got too much story instead. 3's gameplay improved upon 2's and 1... well, 1 is just bare bones stuff.

2 is just a clusterf*** of story and it should be ashamed of itself. The way the story is told, the way in which you feel during it, everything about it is just a pathetic heap of trash. They could have done this so much better, but for whatever reason they royally screwed it up by trying (and failing) to be deep and thoughtful. 3's story is flawless in every way, and 1's story is really fantastic. 4 loses out for some silly stuff, even though it wins on a lot of cool factors. Most of the silliness comes from them having to explain s*** that makes no sense.

This man knows what he's talking about. Very few times in my video gaming "career" have I felt worse about my experience than at the end of MGS2. It literally renders your entire time playing the game worthless.

MGS3's story is entertaining, but it isn't good. B-movie silliness, poor characterization of everyone except The Boss, random jarring 'cool' scenes, bad pacing, a lack of emotion in everything but the ending. No one would care about the plot if it wasn't a Metal Gear game. You might as well extol the greatness of Devil May Cry 3's plot - they're about the same.
