Underwhelming performance by Melee, and I almost put RE4 in #2, as all the defeated top 10 games have had some embarrassing losses now, but I'm keeping RBY and Melee ahead of it for now thanks to their much more impressive wins.

I didn't ask about R/B/Y. You can definitely make a solid argument for R/B/Y having more impressive wins than RE4, although it does have a couple of bad performances.
And we've got to get past the point where we consider a win over Mario 64 more impressive than a win over Mario Galaxy! There's no reason to keep thinking this, and RE4 put up pretty much the same percentage on Galaxy that Melee put up on Mario 64.

I was afraid SOMEBODY was going to admit to this eventually because I knew it was happening.
What Super Smash Bros. Melee did 5 years ago is absolutely irrelevant and should not be factored into Top 25 voting. That's not the purpose of Top 25 voting. Melee was stronger then than it is now, and you have Brawl to thank for that in more ways than one.

As long as we're dealing with the small sample sizes we have in this contest (and they will be small until late in the postseason), board popularity is relevant. Would it be surprising if FFVII lost to Animal Crossing in the postseason in this contest? No, because it's happened before.
If Link goes out and has 5 consecutive bad matches while Cloud impresses 5 times in a row, who will be the favorite in the final? Possibly Cloud, but you bet all his supporters are going to be incredibly nervous about it. And no one will be truly surprised if Link defies all the contest buildup and wins 53/47 again.
That said, Melee's performance in this contest is sufficient to put it where I put it. Tying RE4 and crushing SM64 is plenty impressive.
From: red sox 777 | #027 board popularity is relevant.
Board popularity right now is relevant. Melee 2006 > Melee 2011
What happens in the postseason doesn't really matter because all sorts of things that go against regular season results are going to occur anyway.

Possibly Cloud, but you bet all his supporters are going to be incredibly nervous about it. And no one will be truly surprised if Link defies all the contest buildup and wins 53/47 again.
I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. We're not ranking based on potential. We're ranking based on performance. Could Melee win the whole thing again? Sure it could. I doubt it because I don't think the voters will allow it to repeat, but it could. Is Melee looking better than RE4 right now? Not really.

I'm not ranking on performance. I'm ranking based on which game I would expect to win a match, right now. That is strength, and you quite naturally should consider any information that impacts that evaluation.
And you're admitting one of the reasons you think Melee would win right now is because of something that happened 5 years ago, which is completely irrelevant and should be disregarded.
I don't think it's irrelevant. It's a weak factor, I agree. And my vote wouldn't really change this far into the season if it were excluded. Certainly at the beginning of the season, when Melee was 2-2, it made a big difference. And it should have.
And: would you rather I rank higher the game I expect would lose? Because that's the definition of a dishonest vote.
It shouldn't have because Melee coming out of the gate 2-2 was pretty strong evidence that this isn't the same game that won in 2006, and that gave even less reason to consider a 5 year old contest.
It's entirely irrelevant. It doesn't mean Melee isn't strong because it still is. But Melee in 2006 was at an entirely different level than it is now, and that's been pretty apparent from the beginning.
And no one is saying that Melee is where it was in 2006. If I thought that, I'd have it at #1.
When Melee was 2-2, if you ignored past board results, you probably wouldn't have ranked Melee at all. Why would you, where there were loads of 4-0 games? And you would have been wrong. Moreover, you would have known you were wrong. The rational thing to do was to weigh all evidence and rank Melee somewhere lower than #1 and higher than #25.
You could have still ranked Melee in the top 25 because you factor in the opponents and the margin of victory. But actual performance has to be weighed in there somewhere. Even the best team loses sometimes, but it would defeat the purpose of the voting if you said, "Well, they lost but they're still the best team so let's still rank them #1."

If you didn't consider outside information, you'd have no way of knowing that Melee's opponents in those first 4 weeks were anything special. Of course actual performance matters; this far into the season, it's by far the most important factor. And its actual performance is just as good as RE4's.
From: red sox 777 | #037 And its actual performance is just as good as RE4's.
Well, except for the fact that RE4 hasn't lost yet and Melee's lost twice. I'm not sure why this isn't given more priority because winning every game should be more heavily rewarded the later you get into the season. And don't use "RE4 hasn't beaten anyone good so of course it hasn't" as an excuse. It's been much longer since Melee's beaten a high quality opponent in the timeframe in which RE4 has beaten Galaxy, MGS3, and Mario Kart 64. Melee's last real high quality opponent was back in Week 8, and its best win is comparable to RE4's best.
But to go back to Link/Cloud for a moment, the way you and lefty seem to think Melee should still be ranked this high is comparable to the way much of the board thought back in 2003 when they thought Cloud still had no chance of winning despite the writing being on the wall because Link had dominated 2002 so thoroughly.
Being undefeated in 2011 means a whole lot more than being undefeated in 2006 for the purposes of this contest.

Some weird fluke where Wind Waker had managed to sneak up a bunch of lines on my ballot by accident. Sure, there were plenty of games in front of it losing, but even those ahead of it that had won had ended up behind it--including Brawl, which beat another game that had been ahead of it! Naturally this was fixed.
(lol two 14-5 games ahead of any 15-4 games)

Too lazy to even remove the results since only 2 games move.
Voting the previous week's rankings with games that lost dropping is saying "I have no opinion of my own and am merely agreeing with what the masses decided". (Or, since when games are tied in any position other than 25th Leonhart just chooses one to be in the higher position, occasionally it's not the masses but Leon alone whose decision is being agreed with.) Not the behavior I'd expect from Board 8's "everything-snob", and I don't know why I waited this long to call you out on this.
