I'm deeply sorry to hear that. I never really knew my dad growing up and can't begin to imagine how hard this is for you, but I wish you and your family the best. Stay strong.

So the service went well. It was was a mass. The choir that my dad played with at church came and played for him. The church waived all the fees and they did it for free. and they're gonna see about having a collection made for my mom. Some of my aunts and uncles arrived, many of them I haven't seen in at least a decade. we all went to my moms and we had a big dinner.

we spread his ashes at a park, that happens to be next to a library and a river. My dad loved reading, he loved nature and he loved drawing. He always said he wanted to spend the last of his days wandering around this park, playing music, drawing everything he sees, and walking up to the library to read to rest. so he can do that now as well

we only spread half of the ashes, two of my uncles live in Guatemala, where my dad is from, and we're gonna send the rest to them. They're gonna spread the rest at this one spot next to a river that was basically my dad's favorite hangout place. This also gives them an opportunity to have their own service.

My bros and my sis have already left. I'm here with my mom. we're gonna go to my dad's to clean up the place, he wasn't really a cleaning kind of person, the place is quite cluttered lol

The house is a quarter mine, quarter my lil bro's, quarter my dads and quarter my mom's. he wanted to give the house to my and my bro but he couldn't get around to it, so thats something we'll have to take care of

Gamestop has been really good to me these past days, my boss actually made it to the service. He said that everyone at the store pitched in and they actually bought me Dark Souls with the Guide. That was really nice of them, I was actually touched.

just to anyone who cares, this is my father's life

He grew up in Guatemala City, and was raised with 3 other brothers. Guatemala is south of the border of Mexico

My grandfather used to be an alcoholic, he used to go to bars, drink his ENTIRE check away, show up drunk to the house, and beat everyone

so yea, broken home

so when my dad was 10. TEN, he went and got a job at a newspaper. He would give as much as he could to my grandmother. She would make clothes for her neighbors for a living.
My dad and mom were childhood sweethearts, they lived on the same block. He then self taught himself how to play several instruments, and he pursued his passion of drawing. Obviously he was really poor, he told me he used to sneak into the art room and search the ground for any broken off colored pencil tips and collected them in a box

when my dad was around 20, he was in a band and they actually recorded a few songs on a record. They got some gigs lined up, but my mom ended up moving to America in California. So instead of going with the band, he went to Cali with my mom. and lol my dad actually came here illegally. He eventually was caught but he had already put in his papers to become a citizen, so he was released within 5 hours. Eventually they married and had my older bro and my sis in LA.

on a side note, my grandmother had a copy of his record and we played it during my Sister's wedding

anyways, back to cali, He worked in a factory, then ended up becoming a graphic designer and he knew how to work embroidery machines, which was a rare thing back in the day. Since it was a unique talent, To the point where he actually got offers from across the country.

He actually got an offer to work in El Paso Texas, and yea, I ended up being born there. after a year, he went to florida for another job but it didn't work out, then he went to Wisconsin and my lil bro was born there. He despised the cold weather and wanted out, and alas, we ended up moving back to Texas, to a small town. I was 5 at the time and me and my lil bro were raised there. my older bro is 10 years older than me, just so you can get an idea here.

Eventually my father was replaced with a machine, and his position became obsolete. so we ended up kinda poor as well. I mean, compared to my dad's childhood, we were spoiled as ****, but we were like..how to say... "America" poor, ya know? When I was in ...I want to say, 6th grade? I was framed for vandalizing a science lab and this didn't help things

My dad got a position as a Dish washer in a Mental Hospital. He then got his foot in the door and got a translator certificate and then with that, he attended school to become an LVN, a nurse, and he did it.

I forgot to mention, my mom knew how to operate the machines that would make my dad's designs, so where he went, she was right there handling the machines as a job

she ended up getting a job at a jeweler and has been there since.

we became ok after awhile, when I was in middle school to be exact. I got a job myself and we were great after that. We finally got a computer and dial up internet when I was a freshmen. so yea guys, I'm REALLY late into the game, so thats why I don't know much about computers and wifi and stuff, alright? I didn't get high speed internet til I was in college, few years ago!

being brought up in a broken home, my dad had a temper. He vowed to never strike anyone nor to ever drink, but he didn't realize that words hurt too. I had a small fallout with my dad, when I was like, 13 but we made up before I graduated. Like I've mentioned, hes a hardass, he was always stubborn and very stern, but hey, you can't blame him for that

tl;dr version

My dad came into this country with nothing, he taught himself how to draw, taught himself several languages, how to play several instruments, and became a nurse while raising a family

it don't get much more inspirational than that

My sincerest condolences pun. I hope you and your fam get through this. And thank you for sharing the story about your father. That was good stuff.

Not as awesome as hiding in a cardboard box to ambush vandals, but hey you're his son so he gets partial credit I guess! :)
