Eh. I don't think people even consider Frog/Magus that much better a rivalry than Alucard/Dracula. Alucard's seems more well-known thanks to the iconic opening lines, and having Dracula in a match helps quite a bit. I'd also easily take either of them over either Frog or Magus, so...

I'm surprised that Sonic/Robotnik and Mega Man/Wily got in over Sonic/Knuckles and Mega Man/Proto Man. I guess the casuals saw the hero/villain rivalry as the true rivalry for both Sonic and Mega Man.

I'm sort of torn on Siegfried/Nightmare vs Ramza/Delita, because this site isn't real big on either Soul Calibur or FFT, and it does seem like a match that not many people here will care about since either winner is getting beaten by Squall/Seifer.

When the contest was first announced, I was pretty down on the idea, even calling it a trolling attempt on Bacon's behalf. Having seen the bracket, though, I'll gladly man up and eat some crow - Bacon actually did a really solid job putting the bracket together. I definitely feel like he did the best job possible with what he was given.

It was actually the nominators that dropped the ball, TBH. Setting up a match between Mario/Bowser and Sonic/Dr. Robotnik was a stroke of genius on Allen's part, but even still, I wish more users would have thought outside the box and nominated Mario/Sonic itself; and seriously, SMH at Red/Blue getting a 1-seed, while Blastoise/Charizard is nowhere to be seen. All in all, though, this contest is looking a lot less awful - though I'm still expecting something closer to the quality of GameSpot's contests, as opposed to the typical GameFAQs one.

Anyway, some initial thoughts!

-YESSSSSS @ Conker/Poo and Nook/Redd making the cut.
-Crash Bandicoot not only received a three-seed, he's also going to win a friggin' match. I've officially seen it all.
-For the Southwest Division: Shepard/Saren or Frog/Magus? Decisions, decisions.
-Meta Knight > DeDeDe? Lame.
-Guybrush's match almost looks winnable for him. Almost.
-Sub-Zero/Scorpion vs. Leon/Ada is really tough. I'm tempted to choose the RE4 duo out of fanboyism, but they really didn't look too hot in the vote-ins.
-Lloyd/Kratos being fed to Cloud/Sephiroth is ****ing hilarious.

Very true, but I don't know. Pac-Man vs. a single ghost just seems like a freakin' lame rivalry (and that's coming from a huge Pac-Man fan), while Crash should benefit a decent amount from Cortex's presence.

Mega Man narrowly dies to Cube in Round 3 because Zero is also in the poll.
Mega Man X gets fed to Mario AND Link in the same poll. Granted, this was his first appearance and he got all the way to the quarterfinals.

2010:
Mega Man X gets fed to Link.
Mega Man gets fed to Mario.

2011:
Mega Man X gets fed to Mario.
Mega Man gets fed to Link.'

I don't think so at all, actually! I think he did that so that we could still sort of get the Mario/Sonic experience. IMO, it was a really clever idea.

Hm..

I don't think Pokemon Red/Blue will be all that strong. Stronger than what we've seen from Red alone, yes, but they're still Pokemon humans.

Ryu/Ken's rivarly is honestly as big as Red/Blue. They just dominate different eras. I'll simply go with the stronger characters when all else is the same.

Ok, if Red/Blue gets a very recognizable Ash/Gary picture with their Red's Charizard battling Blue's Blastoise, I would saty it would be the 3rd strongest force in this contest. I really feel like under the right circumstances that in this contest they're an absolute beast.

I'm not a guru master, so here's my genius & stupidify at work:

Conker/GMP wins round 1.
Kirby/Meta has a chance against Sonic/Robotnik?
Sub-Zero/Scorpion wins their division without a sweat.
So does Ryu/Ken, topping Yuna and I'm torn on their round 3 opponent, but...
Luigi is dragged down by Waluigi. Cecil/Golbez wins round 1. Yes, seriously.
Tidus/Jecht over the Bosses. Questionable call, I'll admit. Winner is fed to Samus.
Amaterasu vs Tom Nook...umm...? I haven't played Okami, but I dunno what a Tom Nook even is, so yeah.
I'm taking Meat Boy and Fetus over Zidane/Kuja...until I talk myself out of it.
Frog over Alucard seems like a given to me.
Pac-man over Crash, easily. Crash hasn't been relevant for years. Pac-man is forever.
Ramza over Siegfried.
Wolf 3-D pair wins their first two matches out of novelty. Wears off when they hit Squall/Seifer.
Ryu/Ken beats Samus/Ridley.
FF7 duo combine forces to beat Link, and take the contest.


I need to give some thought as to whether the Pokemon trainers will represent their games in people's minds, or just be a bad Ash vs Gary pairing.

Why do you guys have so much faith in Alucard and Dracula?

Shepard will be much stronger than before due to Mass Effect 2. In fact, I believe that the winter 2010 x-stats show that even before ME2 Shepard could still beat Alucard.

Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest.

But still, Mass Effect 2 has gotten a ton of praise (just look at this: http://www.unikgamer.com/tops/greatest-video-games-of-all-time-1.html) and that praise probably didn't come immediately. There's no reason for Shepard to weaken at this point, and with ME3 coming out in the future he's only going to get stronger. Alucard doesn't have that going for him.

It comes down to Dracula. If Dracula is a none factor, meaning its only the normal Castlevania fans voting for Alucard, Shepard wins. If Dracula draws any significant votes, then Alucard will likely win. Being a day match helps Shepard too, since IIRC Castlevania is typically bad at day.

Whoever wins that match wins the division, so its a vital one.

Initial Thoughts
- 47 day contest? Was hoping it would be ten or so days shorter.
- Reverting to 24-hour matches for a month is gonna feel so slow
- Worst prize batch ever. Not complaining (getting prizes at all is a treat), but GAMEFAQS SHRINKING
- Final Battle Challenge is eeeehhh. Putting a 24-hour halt on things right before the final is a bad idea

Bracket itself
- Link/Dorfo are guaranteed Skyward Sword before the contest ends now. Anyone banking on ANY other winner better also bank that SS is a bomb
- Jill/Nemmy out in round one to cutsies. Oh well, at least they made the bracket
- I expect great things from Frog and Magus
- Unsure about the following:

Conker/Poo vs Ike/Knight
Pokemon Trainers vs Luigi/Walu
Pokemon Trainers vs Ryu/Ken (only because of Pokemon momentum)
Boss/Boss vs Tidus/Jecht
Cloud/Seph vs The Snakes
Dante/Vergil vs Sora/Riku
Ryu/Ken (or Pokemons) vs Samus/Ridley
