Good article, SMuffin. I'm surprised you didn't mention the whole "Columbus was so brave for sailing because everyone else thought the world was flat" fabrication!
Well, although it's true that "everyone thought the world is flat" was a fabrication, I still consider him pretty brave! It still involved sailing into the unknown. From the little I've read, it was very hard to recruit Sailors, and many of his crew were convicts who were pardoned in exchange for going on the voyage.

In any case what I take from all the history regarding Columbus is that Europeans coming to the Americas caused one of the largest masses of death in our known history. That's not really his fault of course, but it's not one of the more pleasant parts of our history.
