next-gen is upon us

Sony
"A trusted source connected to the matter has told Develop that various game projects are at very early stages, though didn’t reveal which of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios had been delegated the work."

"It is a company convention at Sony to remain constantly engaged in R&D work on future platforms – in fact PS Vita development began soon after the release of the PSP in 2005. But Develop has been told that several SCE studios now have teams working on PS4 game concepts that could jump into full production if given the green light."

"What is clear is that Sony is some distance from finalising the technology behind its next generation console, and any early input from internal game studios will be a relief to the development industry."

"Last year, Worldwide Studios (WWS) boss Shuhei Yoshida said Sony has learnt from past mistakes and is now asking game developers to help shape future technology. “We wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware,” he told Develop."

http://www.develop-online.net/news/38916/Sony-studios-begin-PlayStation-4-projects

Microsoft
"Microsoft and industry partners are working towards a 2013 launch of the next generation Xbox, Develop understands."

"Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility."

* Develop understands that Lionhead is working on a project internally named ‘Fable Next’, which will launch on the new console.

* Epic Games’ new Unreal Engine would likely be available sooner than the 2014 date recently given by studio founder Tim Sweeney.

* One source still insists that an EA studio already has rudimentary Xbox console technology on desks. EA has flatly denied the claim.

Further data on the so-called ‘Xbox Next’ project comes amid new information showing that preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games is underway.

The current tech is starting to noticably bottleneck PC development (assuming they want to sell on consoles as well), and while graphics are as great as they really need to be, some games are starting to have some pretty major framerate issues.

Barring some major unforeseen advancement, I can genuinely see these next gen consoles lasting possibly 15 years. I think we DO need a new gen (and 2013/2014 is perfect timing for it), but after that we should be set for a good long while.

Don't care to move onto a new gen anytime soon unless there's some magical explosion of JRPGs for it that make it to NA, but I highly doubt that. For now I don't plan on getting into the next gen until years after the consoles are out.

You could be right. It doesn't look like the market will be ready or willing to accept anything above 1080p for years, and next-gen power should be able to do incredible things with animation and get pretty darn photorealistic with visuals. This has already been the longest gen ever, largely because the public wanted it to be. We'll want the next one to be even longer.

Although, as far as gaming goes, I don't know that next-gen will even necessarily mean 1080p is standard. The thing about more powerful consoles is that there will be better graphics, better effects -- there will always be more that can be done to push systems, which developers will prioritize over something like resolution and framerate, because it's visible and marketable.

I'd guess they'll use a name like XBOX Yunity or something like that, like Kinnect.

I think 2013 is a little soon. Especially with how recent Kinnect and Move are. Nintendo is going ahead with WiiU a bit soon too. It might be the first Nintendo Console I don't buy (aside from VirtualBoy)

nah, the move is done right. though 2013, don't know what to think there really. i'd expect 2014 as the more probable day for the next ps line and xbox. E3 2013 will be fun to see for the consoles there at least, but this upcoming year's is pretty much Wii U.

Cool, looking forward to this. From the looks of things, Nintendo already has a good dpad for their next controller. Hopefully Sony and Microsoft will follow suit, since Sony released their worst one last gen and Microsoft's was legit awful. Fighting games are experiencing a resurgence so it's important to get that right.

They could do away with the weird sets of buttons that happened on 360/PS3, like the triggers and bumpers. Just a straight up controller with the standard buttons will be swell.

Also hoping they have some sort of plan for getting XBLA stuff to transfer over to the next gen console but that might be unrealistic.

Will the mainstream retail releases still be dominated by shooters, and will the growth of low budget indie games continue? I'm interested in finding out.

Exactly. We're already pretty close to the point where graphics don't need to get better, and games become less about superior graphics visually and more about art design.

I think the upcoming 8th Gen will last an extremely long time, and the 9th Gen won't come until society as a whole has the infrastructure in place for everyone to be able to easily and cost-effectively go direct download only. That's what the 9th Gen will be about IMO--abandoning physical media for good.

I think in hindsight 100 years from now, the 7th Gen will be viewed as somewhat of a bridge between what gaming was for its first 30 years and what it eventually became.

Also, development costs should be considered. High development cost and time seems to be wrecking some companies. We're seeing pretty large amounts of time between each Final Fantasy game, for instance. If those increase again next gen we may see some companies really struggle to put out big budget games.

there's a variety of effects that can still be done graphically. shaders and the like have dramatically improved since the hardware there, however yes, you can expect all 3 to pack motion controls in some way or another as well. would expect Vita-PS4 connectivity, 3DS-Wii U connectivity, and Xbox-Windows 8 connectivity. of those, MS murders the other 2 since content-wise you'll probably get data all cloud storage'd to your Windows 8 devices (tablets, phones, PCs) and probably share some games between them as well. just personal theorycrafting here, but it's what they've been trying to do for years now (games for windows was pretty much the attempted in between medium that failed miserably at this; a new operating system won't).

That's a problem with Square Enix and poor management more than it is anything. We've seen larger, better looking games being made in shorter time than it takes Square to make one of their games. Fortunately, they and other Japanese publishers have been preparing for next-gen already instead of letting it sneak up on them like last time.

What exactly happened at Square that caused this? How did they go from the company they were from the 90's through 2001 to what they are now?
