Hodi is a great villain. This might sound strange, but the reason I really dig him is because he's such a phenomenal failure. A sad pathetic fool who tries to change the way things work without even fully understanding how they work. He's nothing more then a headstrong sheep following Arlong's ambition blindly. He shows us that all your effort and determination go to waste if the reasoning behind them is flawed. And because of this flaw, he becomes much more human.

And all of that makes Red Hawk much more enjoyable. Great finishing move Luffy!

I doubt Hodi will see the error in his ways, he's actually very similar to Enel because he deals with absolutes. One thing I've noticed since the time skip is that instead of throwing in the philosophical lessons after the main battle, Oda is deliberately putting them before the battle. This makes sense because everything before the time skip was a learning phase, whereas everything afterwards appears to be "The Adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates". If Hodi dies, it likely won't be because of Luffy, because remember, Luffy's idea of completing defeating an opponent isn't by killing them, it's by taking away their dreams - however this may have, but unlikely, changed since the time skip. If anything, Vanderdecken would kill him.
