This is a good list but missing DD. I'd put it in 3rd.

I suspect MK7 ends up JUST above MK Wii, if only for having better selection of Retro-courses (and being portable).

SMK just doesn't hold up well.

What I don't get is the Wii hate from people that love 64. Wii gets hate for the items/etc... But 64 is just as unbalanced. The only difference is that instead of an over-abundance of blue shells, the balance is front-loaded and it's too easy to keep first place once you have it.

MK64 does okay on balance if you play two players with CPUs for the rest of the slots. I agree that it's kind of a mess on four player.

But that's exactly what it is. In Wii, it's easy to lose first because of the Blue Shells, and thus harder to win.

In 64, the first person to get first is basically never going to lose it, making it too easy to win.

I, personally, don't find a huge fault with either. But I also think that if you're going to find fault with Wii, you should turn off the blinders and admit fault with 64 as well.

But if you'd like some elaboration, I like Mario Kart 64 because it's fun. I don't really care about the lack of balance, but it's the way that's imbalanced that matters.

You can't just say "How can you not like both they're both imbalanced!" because they're not imbalanced the same way.

So you're admitting that you're fine with MK64 being imbalanced makes it too easy/one-sided, but not okay with Wii's imbalance making it too hard/luck-based.

That's all I needed, and I'm not going to argue it. Personal opinion is personal opinion.

I'm just saying you can't bash one for imbalance and not admit the other is, as well. I didn't say you couldn't like one more.

Wii version isn't that bad. The larger issue with the Wii version(as far as online goes) is the 12 players. Too much crap can happen in a 5 second span that can cause you to go from a top 3 finish to a bottom 3 finish.

I didn't bash MKWii for imbalance, and I never have. I don't like MKWii because its version of imbalance isn't fun.

It's like asking how someone could like Melee and not Brawl when they're both ridiculously imbalanced. Their versions of imbalance are quite different.

it's not "harder to win" in the traditional sense. it's more like "I have no idea who will win because I don't exert much control over the situation." I also am skeptical of your claim that it's tough to lose first place in MK64. Whether you're playing with two people and computers or four people, I haven't found that to be the case.

Well, I didn't mean "How can you not like both." I meant people who hate on/bash Wii specifically for imbalance, but then outright praise 64. I meant it more as "How can you bash one for imbalance but praise the other."

Liking is different.

There was a discussion about this in another topic. It's really hard to lose first place in MK64 because not only do you get the usual ways of dealing with red shells, which are the only thing that can really hurt you if you're any good... But you also get mushrooms, which are just flat out overkill.

Well, I would say frontloaded imbalance that benefits the person who's actually winning is better than backloaded imbalance that doesn't actually benefit the person losing and only serves to punish the person winning anyway because it doesn't help the person in last place win.

First place mostly just gets green shells, right? It's been a while since I played MK64 (why play that when you can play CTR!) but I don't recall a glut of mushrooms for first place. I do recall second place getting a lot of red shells. And on most levels at least, if you're so far behind that your red shells run into walls instead of the first place guy he probably deserves to win anyway!

First place generally gets mushrooms and stuff you can drag behind your kart to neutralize red shells.

But 2nd place gets triple red shells often enough to counteract that and mushrooms anyway. I don't really remember having a problem winning a race from behind on a consistent basis.

Well, I'll be fair. With two players + CPU, this is true.

With four players, the balance is terrible. First place gets waaaay too many mushrooms.

Well, when I'm just doing 4 player races, I generally don't care too much about winning or losing. It's just for fun. We usually try to intentionally sabotage each other and ambush each other any way we can whenever we play that mode.

I usually do battle mode if I actually have 4 players anyway.

yeah four players is bad news. it might have been alright if they just plugged the extra two people into the bigger race but having just four people doesn't work out, especially with that item assortment. I think what makes MK64 work is that there's always two computer players artificially keeping up with first place. so even if one of the humans gets screwed and has to work their way back, they'll know that the first place guy is still getting some pressure from those two, and he can use his assortment of stars and lightning bolts to catch them all.

I don't see how anyone can say Mario Kart 64 is good and Super Mario Kart isn't. When MK64 was new, it was already inferior to SMK. Way easier, fewer/worse tracks, worse battle mode... It's a step down in every way.

It controls how people expect a party/racing game to control. I've never gotten anyone to play SMK with me for more than a few races if they didn't play it as a kid.

I fail to see how a battle mode with only two players max and only flat maps is worse than one that has better maps and four players max.
