Who was the Indigo League Champion before Blue? Every region seems to have one, but there's no mention of any trainer in Kanto or Johto better than Lance except for Red and Blue, and there's no mention of a fifth Elite Four member who got kicked out to make room for Lance once Blue conquered the league.

It's assumed to be Lance.

Yeah I always assumed that no one had ever beaten the E4 until Blue and Red came along.

Lance is most likely.

On a more crazy note, could be Oak.

Yeah, remember when you beat Lance he says something like "Congratulations, you're the Pokemon League Champion! . . . Or you would be except that I just got beat by someone else!"

So when Blue beat him, there was nobody else to challenge after Lance, he was the Champion.

But every other region has a champion, so why would the Indigo League have only an Elite Four?

Either nobody had beat them before, or the former Champion left (like Red obviously does at some point between Gen 1 and Gen 2)

R/B/Y is chronologically before the others. Maybe they didn't have champions at this point either.. is there any indication as to how old the Elite Four is? Maybe it was created relatively shortly before R/B.

They're actually about the same time as R/S/E in the timeline, and Hoenn had a Champion.

Isn't it more or less implied that there was no champion/Lance was the "champion," and that Blue was the first one to beat him? At the point where RBY falls, chronologically, Lance is the best trainer before Red/Blue, so it's fully believable he had just never been beaten since the Elite Four's creation.

Actually thinking about it more, in RBY and FRLG, Red never really stays as Champion. If you go back and fight E4 again, Blue is still there as Champion. So I guess if the Champion leaves then the previous Champion takes over. Which then explains why Lance is the Champion again in GSC, since Blue left to be a gym leader.

I've never thought about it before, but that's extremely unfair. Trainers trying to compete in the Indigo League have to beat a freaking Champion before they can even challenge the Elite 4...

It happens the same time as RSE. 3 years prior to GSC and DPP. I really don't know when BW take place.

There was a Champion in RSE however (2 of them actually).

That said, yes, Lance was the Champion.

All the other regions talk about how there is an Elite 4, AND a Champion

Not one single soul in Kanto ever talks about that. Everyone just tells you that they are the 4 strongest trainers in teh world. When you get there, and beat Lance, first time through, you thought you were the Champion. Only after he told you Blue/Gary beat you there did you understand you had one more ridiculous fight left.

This. There was like a grand total of 1 random trainer who did not completely suck in RBY. That one Cooltrainer who had Ivysaur, Wartotle, Charmeleon, and Charizard. Give him a few weeks to train/evolve his Pokemon and he would've had a real shot at beating Lance.

My guess is most people who wanted to challenge the Elite 4 probably just got the Johto badges. Gym leaders at Johto come at you with a HooT hoot and an underleveled Pidgetto, or a Kakuna, Metapod, and a Scyther (before U Turn existed). In addition to Kanto having a FRIGGIN CHAMPION as one of it's gym leaders, you have people coming at you with Golem, Rhydon, Steelix, Kabutops and Omastar

I've always subscribed to the theory that Gym Leaders use a different team based on who they are fighting. Their job is to challenge/test trainers... not beat the crap out of them. Hence why Falkner uses a freaking lvl 9 Pidgey and lvl 13 Pidgeotto when he first fights you... but in the rematch he has a pretty decent team of ~50s (probably his "real" team). And the Kanto leaders went all out on you since you're the champion.

Because in RBY there was only meant to be an Elite Four, with the fourth being the Champion. But it had a plot twist that gave you an Elite Four AND a Champion! They didn't want later games to seem watered down in terms of content, so they always included a Champion besides the Elite Four. They just stopped explaining it in the plot.
