I was actually more skeptical because of that, androgynous japanese villains are a dime a dozen, but ghirahim turned out alright

I've never seen them used in Zelda, though I don't know much about Vaati so he might fit the mold.

Thats just the focus the game has been showing me so far. It's not like Nintendo doesn't have form in the department of centering a games design around a new technology (in this case motion plus). Do you not get that vibe?

Although again I'm pretty early into the game so I'm sure everything is more tutorially right now than it will be. I'm hoping the game immersion will kick in at some point.

Why create a mechanic to purposely discourage you from using your shield?

Because in early games you could just defend then attack. Way too easy. Granted, you can also do that in Skyward Sword, but it requires a certain degree of skill this time, meaning that you are rewarded for your skill.

Heck, you don't even need your shield for most of the game. Going back to the town each time you lose your shield is a waste of time.

I think I see your problem. You're making a bunch of negative snap judgments about the game, and they're all wrong, either because you're bad at the game or you think you're more genre savvy than you really are.

Does the Zelda series even do tortured villains? Ganondorf tried to play the sympathy card in Wind Waker, but we all know he's just a dick. And Zant was just kind of crazy.

Also Smurf, you clearly based your perception of Ghirahim on one look at the cape, since you managed to peg him as exactly the opposite character to what he actually is.

And that's just his intro scene. He has some amazing moments late game that really show his over the top flamboyancy and craziness.

Vincent Valentine in the sense of being a vague undefined character with their design favouring fan service over any sort of relevant appearance to the plot. I never called him sullen or brooding, just a transparent attempt to be an "edgy" character. I took an instant dislike to him because of this, he strikes me as someone who belongs in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Zelda never really went in for the cookie cutter characters like that.

A lot of people seem very into this guy judging by the reactions in this thread so I guess it worked. Or maybe he turns into something worthwhile later on, guess I'll find out.
