gen 2 had the worst designs. followed by gen 1, but they've been improved upon in later ones. just that those original sprites, god no. gen 3 actually had a lot of awesome ones which was just surprising, and gens 4 and 5 kicked it up a notch. overall, 3's the real standout for me in that it set the level that things should be at, but i think i like gen 4's designs best, followed by 5.

What? No I praised Camerupt. A camel with friggin' volcanoes for humps is a brilliant concept and its creator should be praised.

@Suor

Besides, I don't see the correlation between Dragonite not being intimidating and your whole point. Salamence is just a quadrupedal dragon instead of a bipedal one, its design isn't even more complex.

Not vastly more complex, but it is more complex. And it's vastly less cute. I was making a slightly different point with the pseudo-Legendaries: that the vast majority if Gen 1 pokémon are simple and cute, almost as though GameFreak was afraid to offend, with obvious exceptions such as almost any third evo in a three-stage line and the Legendaries aside from Mew- who does look pretty damn cutesy and simple.

Butterfree is actually pretty boring-looking. It's no Magikarp or anything, but it's not something that makes me excited either. Then again early Bug pokémon rarely do with the exception of Sewaddle. Beautifly's not a vast improvement and I never implied it was. By the by, starters and legendaries are kind of a special case, so they don't make for the best examples imo. Of course Charizard, Blastoise, Mewtwo, and Articuno would be almost/just as awesome if they were released in a later generation. They have the most beloved designs of Gen 1 period (Articuno and Mewtwo's are not "simple yet effective" design btw). Gengar however probably wouldn't be nearly as popular if it wasn't the first Ghost type though. That and its stats.
