Must say I'm pretty surprised. I figured most people would be burned out from November to really be interested in this. Guess the marketing worked!

Marketing always work, people are stupid.

Now the thing that matters is if the game retention's good or not.

After the first (free) month we'll see what happen.

Yup. I know 0 people IRL who got it and I know some huge Star Wars/KOTOR fanboys. It's just not worth playing an MMO that your friends aren't playing and if you have friends playing anything, they're already 3 expansions deep in WoW.

I doubt it'll go free anytime soon. Bioware is one of the powerhouse developers and its backed by EA, so its essentially their response to WoW. They'll do everything in their power to make it a viable competitor and not one that just dies off and needs to go free down the line.

They better start pump-up content then, because people are getting to end-game already and there's not much to do there.

Also apparently some classes level 50 quests are bugged still.

Oh and they need to fix crafting to it's actually viable and not totally crappy except for one skill (Biochem)

Also need to cater to people who want to play Neutral (as a Bounty Hunter if I am punished for being neutral it's really stupid).

Game is still good though, but far from something that can kill WoW in the long run.

Don't confuse "kill" with "compete."

Battlefield 3 is "competitive" with Modern Warfare 3. It's not going to kill it.

Yeah, this. Even if they only get half of WoWs subscribers, its still a massive hit and by far the 2nd biggest MMO ever.

Actually.. the SWTOR case isn't unique to the mmo genre.

Lord of the Rings Online
April 2007 - LOTRO becomes the best selling PC game of the year
December 2007 - LOTRO dwindles but holds steady at 300,000 subscriptions
September 2010 - LOTRO becomes free to play

Age of Conan
June 2008 – AoC launches, sells over 1 million copies
February 2009 – AoC drops below 100,000 subscriptions
May 2011 - AoC becomes free to play

Warhammer Online
October 2008 - Warhammer reaches 750,000 players in less than a month
January 2009 - Warhammer's subscriptions dwindle to 300,000
November 2009 - Warhammer launches its "Endless Free Trial"

Aion
September 2009 - Aion becomes the best selling PC game of the year, 400k pre-sales and 1 million units sold on its western release
Now - Aion has 3.5 million subscribers in Asia but faces dwindling numbers in the Western World which has never reached even 1/3 as many subscribers as Asia

Rift
March 2011 - Rift launches, sells just over 1 million copies
August 2011 - Trion opens Rift free week, rumoured to be an attempt to boost dwindling subscriptions
Now - Trion has suspiciously never stated actual subscription numbers, but instead chose to "boast" that they took (a measily) 600k subscribers of WoW's then 12 million

because the beginning's the easy part. to go further you need some good content throughout the middle.

of which i'm gonna trust Bioware knows how to do that. they're the only ones since Blizzard who are a true developer.

SWTOR is worth it just to finish 1 or 2 class quests. But yeah the free month will be enough for that... I wouldn't be surprised if it's free to play in 2 years or so.
