I forget the old time exactly, but it's about a minute faster, I believe. I think the old record was 1:48:xx

Ah, it was high 1:47. Couldn't remember if it was that or low 1:48. I guessed wrong!

...Maybe that's what I'm remembering then. It shouldn't be though because I was there for about 97% of Sig's WR run live and most of the days leading up to it. ...Unless he didn't update the target time he kept on the stream, which is what I looked at.

it was listed as the 1:47 time for at least a few days

Sig crushed in the wr attempt, dropped his best time by at least a minute

it's kinda funny, the record was like 1:58 a year and a half ago. the first really good time was when Elmo (Japanese player) got 1:49:49 in May this year. that's around when i started watching. Sig couldn't even get below that number before the marathon (except on Virtual Console, which has 2 less minutes of lag compared to N64), but he practiced for like 2 months straight without doing any runs really, and then he goes and gets a time almost 3 minutes faster. pretty crazy stuff.

I coincidentally started watching the stream right as he was on Rainbow Ride on his winning run. Lucky.

He completely messed up when going for 100 coins there, falling down repeatedly and almost dying. It was crazy tense and everyone in the chat was like RESTART, GG, etc, but he still crushed the previous record. Pretty awesome.

Kind of reminds me of Cosmo. I remember a few months back when Cosmo was trying to retake the WR at around 2:37 it would usually take multiple runs to get to Adult Link, let alone the later parts of the run. After he got it I kind of stopped paying attention for a while. Then, a few weeks ago I stumble into Cosmo's marathon and he routinely crushes that mark and can almost effortlessly do a complete run without any major mistakes.

I'm convinced he'll have the WR for OoT under 2:30 fairly soon, assuming he keeps going for it with any regularity.

Sounds like the opposite of my experience with it!

I was there the entire run... until at 116 or 117 Stars my internet died and I missed the end. I was almost positive he'd get it barring an epic collapse though.

how much room for improvement is there?

i see the TAS record is only 1:39 so it can't be much faster than they're currently doing it

i didn't watch yet to see how many really bad mistakes he makes, but i can't imagine it's possible to finish faster than 1:45 or so with a perfect run

Well, he lost, like, 45 seconds on Rainbow Ride alone, with his death, and the dumb hit detection. Then he had that 10 second lapse with the troll piano, and a bunch of small hiccups elsewhere. I'd say there's easily a few minutes of improvements to be had.

the thing about speedrunning is that they're constantly finding ways to do stuff faster - before Sig's current record, the fastest run I had seen was Elmo's 1:49:49, and Sig's had tons of new strategies that made stuff even faster which didn't even exist a few months ago

the limit is definitely close, but it's impossible to say exactly how close

Watching Sig do a perfect Tick Tock Clock is always so amazing.

Sig just actually lost a 70-star race to some guy called Noktem by about 30 seconds. It was intense, there were four of them racing and Noktem was behind for a while but Sig died on like, THM or something and he got caught out.

I really need to get an n64 so I can play this game again.

the TAS also has backwards longjumps and other tricks that will never be done by actual people in real time (or at least not during a full 120 run). though it's been so long since i've seen the 1:39 that i don't remember how many such tricks there are.

yeah that's my point

if they're only 8 minutes behind the TAS run then i doubt they can get much faster

the first TAS was 1:42 something. it's pretty hard to imagine a real run beating that. so somewhere between that and 1:45 would be about the limit i think.

oh yeah that happened to me too, started watching when he was getting his 116th star or so. I didn't even know that he was going for a week already until like a day later.
