not being a dick, i'm legitimately interested in why it's getting so much hype because all i know about it is "it's an rpg"

i'm interested in checking it out but only if it's truly worth an rpg timesink

Not sure either, but I've heard talk that it's the only jRPG of this generation that captures that old magic feeling found in games like FFX. It also apparently has an amazing soundtrack.

every aspect about the game is fantastic. Story, characters, battle system, soundtrack, exploration, questing, etc. Basically FF12 done right and while I loved FF12, Xenoblade is 10 times the game that is in terms of quality. The only complaint you could put against it is being on the Wii it's not in HD and the character models are pretty basic. The graphics of the environments more than make up for that though

AND DAT MUSIC

If it bears any resemblence to an FF, it'd be FFXII. Focus on exploration across a huge, stunning, world. Characters/plot are there and are developed, but they're not the most memorable. It's one of those games that you need to lose yourself in to get why so many love it. Soundtrack is amazing.

(Best JRPG of gen is still Valkyria Chronicles though!)

Xenoblade is an all round excellent JRPG. There are great JRPG's this gen but not as consistent. Lost Odyssey for example has a great story but a rather mediocre battle system. Vesperia has amazing gameplay but a rather mediocre story. FF13..... well..is just mediocre period

VC is more of a strategy game really.

But yeah that's the best way to describe it. Basically FF12 but without the terrible characters and boring story.

It's only got a PAL release so far, right? So it runs at 50FPS?

It's one of those games that encourages you to explore and kind of do everything at your own pace. There's no real penalty for death, so a lot of the area's you normally wouldn't be allowed to go in for stupid rpg reasons "This cave isn't open yet! come back later!" are explorable and filled with terrible monsters that will kill you in seconds.

What are you talking about?

And no Xenoblade does not run at 50FPS. it's 30FPS max. US version will be the same. I think you mean TV signals. Xenoblade supports both 50 and 60hz TV's.

Hearing people talk about Xenoblade reminds me of WoW, I started undead and after a few hours, I was able to poke my nose into Western Plaguelands at level 8 or so.

No I'm talking about the gamespeed

FFX for instance runs at 60 in NTSC and 50 in PAL. with that decrease in speed the PAL version just runs slower. most games have been that way for the last two decades, just wanted to know if that's still the case now of if they've solved it.

yeah I realize that it "runs" at 30fps. Third Strike functions similarly where the game engine runs at 30fps but doubles frames to output 60 to the TV.

all I'm asking is if the PAL version runs slower than the NTSC version.

Describe its battle system? Is it old school "control all of your party" or more like FF12 or FF13?

Literally hundreds. Quite a good system too, for instance you don't have to return to the questgiver to complete most of them.

Battle system

Xenoblade Chronicles has a real-time action-based battle system, where party members will "auto-attack" when enemies enter their attack radius, similar to Final Fantasy XII's battle system. However, manually-activated special attacks, called Arts, each have their own "Cooldown" time after being used; Talent Arts, on the other hand, can only become available for use again after using enough auto-attacks. Arts for each character must be set on a "Battle Palette" at the bottom of the screen, which can be modified outside of battle. Movement of the character in play is also executed manually with the analog stick; however this only plays an integral role when using Shulk's Arts, as they are more effective if used from the side or behind. Another feature of battle is the aggro ring, which appears around party members who are targeted by enemies. The bigger the ring, the more focused an enemy's rage against that member will be. This gives Shulk and other members the chance to attack the enemy from the side or rear. Xenoblade Chronicles also has the "Visions" system, where Shulk can see glimpses of enemies' future attacks. With this information, the player has to try to react (e.g. getting out of harm's way) or prevent it from happening (e.g. warning fellow party members about the attack or using Shulk's Monado Shield Art), thus "changing the future."

It's like the Tales Of battle systems. You can control any party member, but only one at a time.
The others are controlled by the CPU =).
