The best part of that episode is the meteor shower scene.

The effect is great, everyone standing on a cliffside and watching the stars in the night, it's a beautifully done scene. Not to mention the music, Applebloom and Sweetiebelle standing on their sisters' backs, aughuagauh

I just read through this entire topic and I have to say, it delivered in exactly the way I expected it to. You put up a good fight, Omega. But eventually everybody succumbs to the adorableness that is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

My fiancee is nostalgic for the older pony stuff from the 80s and I think it's absolutely horrible. I can't bear to watch it. But this new show? I love it. It's mad good.

I'm glad you've accepted this.

Season 2 is better on average than season 1 so far, too.

Season 1 had quite a few clunkers. Season 2, not many so far.

Eh, season 2's had a fair amount of bad episodes. It started out strong, but there was a stretch of meh episodes, at least for me. The most recent AJ episode was the only really good one in a while.

I've honestly gotten more enjoyment out of Friendship is Witchcraft lately than I have out of Friendship is Magic.

The only below average episode I'd say is in S2 so far is Mare Do Well. MAYBE Secret of my Excess if you really don't like spike for some reason.

S1 and S2 of MLP are very similar to S1 and S2 of Community, so far.

S1 of both, they aren't perfect, they have their share of meh episodes, but every episode they do is full of confidence and attention to detail. Even the worse episodes seem to add to the show in some way, and the best episodes are instant classics that raise every bar. S2 takes the newfound popularity of the show and goes for more risks and grander sets. Each episode is kind of its own thing, where in S1, each episode felt like a part of the entire season as a whole.

Well, the only episodes I've been really meh on are The Cutie Pox, Mare Do Well, and Secret of My Excess. Really? A Spike episode? Agh, such a bad idea. Luna Eclipsed, Hearth's Warming Eve, and The Last Roundup were some of the best episodes yet.

Main/side character rankings for S1? Top 5 episodes?

Not quite how I planned to do them I must say. I initially didn't care enough about the show to bother with anything approaching quality. Not sure quality ever entered the picture after I started liking the show either. I just settled on a format of making comments as I watched the episode. Some might say it breaks up the flow of the show; I say it gave me the will to continue watching ponies. Lets me make predictions and rant about physics and most importantly, stretch the page length considerably.

With regard to S1 rankings of the ponies...

Twilight Sparkle > Rainbow Dash >= Rarity > Fluttershy >= Applejack > Pinkie Pie >= Spike

Twilight remains Best Pony and Pinkie Pie remains Worst Pony. They all surprised me with various moments of awesomeness though, and I can't quite say that any of the main cast is particularly bad designed, there are just some I don't like as much. Miscellaneous note: Fluttershy is the only main pony that spellcheck hates.

Side characters would be a bit tricky as I forgot most of them. All that I can remember definitively is that Photo Finish is best side pony and Zecora wasn't so bad either. Maybe someone can give me a list of S1 side characters and I will inequality the hell out of them.

Top 5 episodes...I do give a rating after each episode, though those can be somewhat taken with a grain of salt as I was less concerned with them early on (though the show was still finding itself then, so not a huge issue). The main problem is that some episodes have had exceptional yet minor things in an otherwise dull episode, but if I had to choose 5 episodes...lesse...

Episode 8: Look Before You Sleep
Episode 14: Suited for Success
Episode 16: Sonic Rainboom
Episode 19: A Dog and Pony Show
Episode 23: The Cutie Mark Chronicles
Episode 26: The Best Night Ever

If I had to choose 5 episodes I would choose 6. You might say I successfully made a top 5 list...

Still, these represented roughly the best and most fun episodes of the season for me in no particular order (except sequential which also happens to roughly correspond to quality).

I hear good things about season 2 and it has been gnawing at my curiosity as to how Discord comes into being a thing. Probably magic abuse, if I know my fantasy plots. We shall see.

It was a mediocre episode that relied too much on weird slapstick than it did on what the show does best, which is character interaction. The first half was okay, and the train scene is really good, but it all goes downhill after that.

I also think most people were expecting an Applejack episode, something she really needed. Instead we got this weird Dash/Pinkie episode with a few buffalo mixed in.

And the pie fight scene was pretty dumb, not gonna lie.

The problem is that everybody misses the broader element that make Over a Barrel hilarious: It completely and totally subverts standard modern Wild West stories by making the settler ponies more sympathetic than the natives (food vs. stampede land?). Also, the settlers are allowed to stay because they're the only ones who know how to make an exceptionally delicious food item (alcohol, anybody?). It also has Pinkie sing a bad song while dressed in fishnets that everybody calls out on being terrible.

I don't care for the wild west. Nevermind that the wild west was by and large subject to corporate domination...but that is a tale for another day. It was a stupid story regardless of any subversion it might have had. The buffalo at least have tradition on their side. The ponies can just go 'lol we settled last year and reeeeeally don't want to move'. More sympathetic my ass. This is in a land where ponies control the weather and where some can fly. Food is a nonissue. The resolution was far too quick but I do concede that Pinkie being called out as terrible was a saving grace of the episode.

Sonic Rainboom had RD being awesome. This episode had nopony being awesome.

So yeah...lol opinions.

Over a Barrel is an episode that...I didn't find completely awful but definitely lower tier. Apple Jack talking to a tree was a little out of character. The racial stereotypes were pretty questionable. Horse drawn trains...is technically historically accurate--train tracks were originally placed to make horses drawing stuff easier. But it doesn't make sense when you ALSO have a steam engine. Using pies to replace bullets doesn't make remote sense, even by pony logic standard. And everyone pausing and being sad when the Chief gets hit by a pie is just...what? Isn't that what the settlers wanted? Are the first nations so poorly trained at war that they will let grief interrupt a battle?

Add to this that the mane cast doesn't really do much. (Pinky's song is good, but the rest of the episode is about characters that no-one cares about which we never see again).

You know, I've tried to roll my eyes and call Sonic Rainboom a terribly overrated episode, and I realized that I can't really do that with a straight face. Too much stuff that I like comes from that episode, like the Fluttershy "yay". I'm not sure I'd put it in a top 5 or anything, but I really can't deny that Sonic Rainboom is a good episode.

Plus one of the ponies bullying RD was totally Kevin.

Over a Barrel suffers from two main problems - it feels completely out of tune with the rest of the series, and nothing the main characters do actually matters. It just feels like some boring stuff happens and none of the main cast really has a say in it or is affected by it in any way. It's definitely not one of the better episodes.

I hate to bring up writers again, but it was a Dave Polsky episode, who also did Pinkie Keen, another episode which introduced characters or concepts that are never expanded on or brought up ever again (Pinkie sense. Except for ONE throwaway line in what's considered the worst S2 episode)

The difference is that Feeling Pinkie Keen isn't out of line with the rest of the series at all and is basically a f***ing brilliant episode no matter what anyone else says.

While Feeling Pinkie Keen gets way too much flak for people overthinking the moral, I wouldn't rate it too high. Too much slapstick, which wasn't too present in any of the episodes preceding it.

I would rank it near the bottom, but not in a tier of episodes I straight up dislike.

Feeling Pinkie Keen was really good. It had some new/strange concepts that it introduced, but the pacing and development of Twilight was well done, so it made it all believable.

It also contains gratuitous amounts of Twilight being awkward and obsessive and foolish, which is always funny.

Good introduction to season 2. I liked it more than the season 1 opening. Went right into the thick of things. Though it could do this because characters were already established. Still, awesome first episode and awesome villain. 10/10
