I don't see why so many people here love the guy. If you only look at the letter of the law then you won't get anything accomplished. If we weren't in a recession it would be one thing, but if he wins we'd be stuck in it for another 4 years.

Unfortunately, he has crazy ideas that would be devastating to our country if implemented. I wish that someone with more palatable ideas who scared the establishment actually caught on.

I like him because he feels honest. Watching the speeches after the New Hampshire primaries, it was like...

Mitt Romney: I'm gonna fix EVERYTHING and make us the best damn nation in the world without negatively impacting ANYONE!

Ron Paul: I'm gonna make changes that people might not like, but they need to be made.

They had this thing of CNN where undecided voters could say whether they liked or disliked what was being said. Romney was almost ALWAYS liked, whereas Ron Paul rose and dropped. It was clear that he was saying his honest beliefs, rather than saying what voters want to hear.

No, as long as he kept trying to do what he promised. Sometimes you just can't beat Congress, which is fine.

Obama does things that are completely opposite of what he says previously, and then makes up BS excuses for them. Hell, if Obama just straight up said he was changing his mind on an issue, that would be way better than what he does now. Don't pass something "with reservations," pass it and admit that you're doing it for political power. You're not gonna lose the election anyways.

This is the interesting part, because in an age of constant new regulations and new coats of paint on the same broken policies, peeling everything away and going back to fix the basics IS progression. Conservatism is such a strange and offensive concept to so many politicians nowadays, it's like the traditional political spectrum has been flipped (or more accurately, become useless).

Some of those positions are incredibly naive. Look at the "taxes" tab, for example. You want to eliminate the deficit while at the same time eliminating the income tax and capital gains tax? It doesn't work like that; it's simple math.

SS medicare and the military are not ending. It's not going to happen. It doesn't matter if you think it should; it won't. You might be able to get some reform in, but even cutting them by 20-30 percent is probably politically impossible (especially the first two). Furthermore, if you move all of the tax to spending, you are literally taxing the poor at a higher rate than the rich (since they have to spend a higher portion of their income), which is ridiculous.

Cutting those programs is about as impossible as Ron Paul being elected President of the United States. Once he's in there, he just needs 1/3 of either the House or the Senate to back him (get the Tea Party to help, say), and he can pursue a policy of blanket vetoing everything, absolutely everything, unless his demands are met.

I didn't even vote for Obama. I voted for Nader, so don't give me that "admit you made a mistake" crap.

The wars are kind of a catch 22 for a politician. If you pull out of them all, everyone hates you for CUTTING AND RUNNING and NOT LISTENING TO THE GENERALS because we all have a giant military boner. If you stay in, they hate you for the opposite reasons. Obama has gotten us out of one of them, and has signed cuts to the military budget and proposed actually removing troops from many places overseas. That is all steps in the right direction.

I don't like Obama, but Ron Paul is not a better alternative to anyone who is a progressive. I think you have a very incorrect definition of a progressive if you think that "back to our roots" is in any way what progressives want. There are genuinely progressive politicians on the left out there that agree with the GOOD parts of what Ron Paul says (get out of wars, repeal patriot act, etc) such as Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader....but also do not believe his INSANE domestic/economic/social policy stuff. So stop acting like Ron Paul is a big progressive hope, the hope for progressives lies elsewhere. Ron Paul is for people who believe in a crazy libertarian utopia that have no grasp of history.

Nobody has ever been remembered fondly for "taking us back to the past". This is why conservatives are a joke.

Sorry what I meant to say is that it is political suicide to try and end the programs outright, and thus it's not going to happen, especially as politicians are too afraid to do something as simple as raise taxes. You are correct that we could enter a scenario where we are simply unable to meet our obligations if things are not reformed sufficiently.

Israel is practically a military superpower these days. If(when) they wage war with Iran, they could hold their own completely, and probably win. No need for us to risk getting involved.

Filibusters and vetoes are how you get stuff done in Washington today. Change is not easy. You could have a more gradual reduction of SS and medicare than instant amputation of course- maybe say that people over 65 today get the full amount, people 50-65 get less, people 40-50 get less than that, people below 40 get nothing, or something like that. And it's not true that people have been paying taxes all their lives and gotten nothing- the money was spent by their elected representatives, on things like bank bailouts and wars in Iraq. The military is easier to make drastic cuts to quickly.

Anyway, any response to my point that a uniform sales tax is completely regressive?

I agree it would be completely regressive and I do not support it at all. As far as I am aware, neither does Ron Paul.
