Sounds like Zelda would have made the top 10 if it was ranked by single SKU instead of combined.
Star Wars: The Old Republic was the 14th best-selling title in December, and it was released only on PC. While the collectors edition sold less than the regular SKU, the SKUs both generated about the same in dollar sales, thanks to a hefty price point that fans were willing to spend on this well-loved franchise.
There is one title that would have fallen in the top 10 for December if we were ranking on an SKU basis rather than on a combined platform basis as we do now: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was the 10th best selling software SKU for the month of December.

Mario Kart DS and NSMBDS were top 10 sellers for months.
Yeah, the last two handheld Mario/Kart games are among the best-selling games ever. The only reason the new ones aren't annihilating everything is because 3DS is so new.

that's gotta really sting for sony. both enemy consoles will end with slightly doubling and slightly not doubling their main system in the US. worse, the wii's numbers are low and they're planning to start rolling the new system out soon while sony's most likely the slowest of the 3 to move on. that's gotta hurt.
but MS is one hell of a beast in the US. hell i was one of those 360 buys in November finally, so yeah. good to see them doing so well, and am looking forward to windows 8 unifying phones, consoles, and pcs.

Sony's biggest problem isn't being outsold (worldwide the PS3 is an even match for the 360 in pure numbers), it's making money. Software sales have been much better for the 360, Live subscriptions (and advertising) have made MS a ton of revenue that Sony can't match. The rest of their company is struggling. And as if all that wasn't enough, they've got to back up a flagging Vita.
I don't think Sony will want to launch the PS4 soon at all. I'd be amazed if they teased it at E3. The PS3 is now bringing them in some money, and I'm sure they intend to let it continue to do that for a couple of years.
MS is in the driving seat and will be looking to go toe to toe with Nintendo in the home console market worldwide. The Kinect has been a massive success, and they're in a stronger position than ever. I expect they'll release their next console soon. I'm interested to see where they go with it, though I'm resigned to a strong Kinect emphasis. I'm sure Nintendo will be up for the fight.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
Everything can change based on new information, but the way this gen is winding down, the battle for next-gen is looking to be between Microsoft and Nintendo. Nintendo in Japan, Microsoft in America, Europe anyone's guess. It's entirely possible that something ends up changing that, either one of those two has a blunder that deflates some of their hype (MS focusing too much on the casual would leave Sony open to be the 'hardcore' option, if they chose to go that route, as an example), but Microsoft and Nintendo has definitely risen to the top this gen. Sony does well worldwide -- I believe the PS3 heading into the holiday season was the best-selling console this year -- but they don't dominate any one territory like they used to.

nintendo had the us until the last year. >_>; i'd imagine that battleground isn't really that quite cleancut. yeah ms likely wins it - again for the 3rd time - over them but the gap wouldn't be that big.
still you can't call any of these consoles a failure. they're all successes, just that nintendo and ms are massive at it.

I wonder how much 360 can sell over the Wii in 2012 - I mean not only will the Wii continue to die while the 360 has only been growing, but we're getting the Wii U to switch Wii sales towards.

Yeah, you can't say anything definitive, because as you said the situation was very different at the start of this gen than how it ended up, but we'll see. It's about that time for new consoles.

Wanglicious posted... ...also wait. where's uncharted on that list.
It's probably not too far off from Zelda. Those two are similar to each other in that they don't light up charts, but have a large group of fans and receive a lot of critical praise.

Makes sense! Outside of Portal 2, there weren't any big name sellers in the first half of the year. Gotta stop packing every single game in the same two months.

Yeah, when you think about it we're almost 7 years into the current generation. Feels about the right time.

MS might be headed towards a dangerous road next gen. They might be stupid enough to think the casuals will adopt new consoles due to name alone and end up like Sony this gen. Then the PS4 comes in and destroy them like the PS2 did to the DC.
