#38: The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
Recommended by: Ayvuir
Favorite Part: 3:40 – 3:46

THAT VIOLIN. I think it’s apparent that there’s a lot of emotion here but the music itself doesn’t really ‘speak’ to me or whatever. BUT I still like this track. The song seems incredibly soft and mellow despite the louder instrumental parts but the highlight of the track for me is easily 3:40 – 3:46. Even though the song got loud(er) at parts, it didn’t seem loud, almost like it was being somehow contained or muffled. But for those six seconds, everything is kind of let go. There’s a Lost in Translation vibe there. The fallout from those six seconds sounds a little more released but like he composed himself after. So yeah, to me it’s just a good hard emotional piece.

This kind of reminded me of Arcade Fire’s Neighborhood #1 too. Not in the sound of the song but how he sings at one point. Like around 3:40 – 3:46 here and 2:40 – 2:46 on Tunnels. Is it just me?!

#37: Jack Wall - Myst IV Revelation Main Theme
Recommended by: MycroProcessor
Favorite Part: see below

I’ll admit it. I don’t think of, or rather forget about, VG music/OST stuff in the same vein as other music. Not only because of my minimal exposure to it but also because it just doesn’t come to my mind when I think of the term ‘music’. Because of this, I’m even less likely to listen to it simply because I forget about it. I also have this thing where music when I’m playing a game completely goes over my head sometimes and I’ve even turned off the volume when I’m playing portables for whatever reason. It just felt weird.

Anyway, I like female backing vocals like this. There’s a sense of something epic looming here, like some primal **** about to go down. Exciting and I like it but it gets a little played out for me on subsequent listens. Maybe it has to do with the thing I mentioned above.

Recommended by: Ace_Killjoy
Favorite Part: 1:05-1:15

I have almost the same feelings about this track as the Metal Slug one except I think this tune is catchier. Okay…maybe a LOT catchier. Really fast paced and gets me pumped. And those ten seconds holy **** (in the good way). Exactly the kind of stuff I want to be killing whatever the things you kill in Megaman are to.

#35: Goldfinger - Superman
Recommended by: Mega Mana
Favorite Part: Look down

I think this is a shining example of how one little part of the song can make me like it so much. I sometimes get this thing where I become fixated on the smallest aspect of the song, whether it be some lyrics, a breakdown, the bridge, etc. and I like it so much that my feelings about that one part end up elevating all the other aspects of the song. It was actually the inspiration for the favorite part section of the write-ups because I have had songs where one moment either changed my opinion or made it that much better. Now, although I might think of that song with the one part I really like lower than a song I like all parts of, it immediately becomes memorable in my mind and I have a special place for it.

Anyway, getting to the song itself, ska always carries this bubbly feeling with it but on the other side of things, it can get old and uninspired pretty quickly. Adding to the paragraph above about favorite parts, the words that immediately grabs me is “pretending I’m a Superman.” It just brings up so much to imagery and emotion in my mind. This feeling of invincibility in the time of fragility and denial in the face of truth. And the lyrics can sound contradictory to the sound of the song but it’s twisted in a way that it can be perceived as an overall empowering song.

#34: Air France - Never Content
Recommended by: Furious Fura
Favorite Part: da beat

Holy crap what is this. Kind of reminds me of AnCo. This song gets my vote for ‘Song on this list that most makes feel like I’m flying’ which is a very prestigious award. That beat is very surreal and catchy and it has me hooked from the first second. Vocals aren’t out of this world but I think they accompany the beat well enough. Also definitely get the nature vibe from it. It’s like I’m wearing nothing at all! Nothing at all! Nothing at all!

Edit: I didn’t even see the video and all the planes and clouds until now because I don’t really look at the actual video while listening to these things.

#33: Angels and Airwaves - Call to Arms
Recommended by: 20three
Favorite Part: chorus

I usually don’t like blink songs but I really like some A&A stuff. It’s the kind of rock that’s not overly annoying and fun to sing along to which is completely the opposite of a lot of blink stuff for me. It’s more serious than silly goofing off stuff from blink which I appreciate more. There’s just a more emotional drive in A&A stuff and I feel like Tom shows off his stuff a lot better.

Like in this one, he does this thing in the chorus where he stresses the ‘I’ and other words in the chorus to have this kind of rhythmic meter and it sounds better since the song itself doesn’t sound like ‘stupid pop’. The words sound all jumbled during the verses and it’s just fun.

Recommended by: Psycho_Kenshin
Favorite Part: Opening

God damn this has some attitude. I feel like I need to take it to a corner and shove a ****ing brick through its mouth to make it shut up. But that’s not going to stop it. It tells you from the beginning what it’s going to bring and what it’s expecting. And it brings it fast and rough but regrettably it starts to sputter towards the end and somewhere around the 3 min. mark I’m tired of it but I know the next time I get with it I’m going to go so hard at it again and again and again…

But damn I wish it was as disgusting in the back as it was in the front. I can’t get over how nasty it is.

#31: Camel - Echoes
Recommended by: MycroProcessor
Favorite Part: beginning

Immediately begins with a kickass intro and continues being awesome. Would have been fine with it being an instrumental but when the lyrics kicked in it somehow made it more stand out. I’ve mentioned before but Camel and other prog rock acts I’m absolutely fine with listening to it in the moment but for some reason I don’t find myself listening to it a lot. I suppose that has to do with the usual lengths of the tracks I subconsciously think that no matter how good a song is, I can better spend that same amount of time finding two tracks just as good and I get more enjoyment/quantitative enrichment out of the time I spend. So this ends with ‘I love it’ but don’t see myself listening to it that often.

#30: Johnny Mercer - Strip Polka
Recommended by: Emporer_Kazbar
Favorite Part: 1:36 – 1:50

I read it as ‘Strip Poker’ and was expecting something really raunchy and I’m still not sure if that’s what I got. It may just be my lack of exposure to this but I don’t think it’s a subject matter that’s frequently clashed with polka. It’s catchy. It gives off a very light hearted vibe to something a little dirty and I think the combining of these two elements make it appealing and interesting enough.

Plus, from 1:36 – 1:50 where multiple people drone “take it off” it sounds a bit like Nappa from DBZ to me so that makes it hilarious.

It wasn’t until like the third or fourth listen that I actually caught this one part of the lyrics: “The way you slap my face just fills me with desire.” Well then. Write me down as interested. I get excited about these things. It made me actually want to go look up the lyrics and not a lot of songs on this list made me want to do that. So props for that.

The rest of the song is good too. The psychedelic hippie feeling makes me feel like I could drift off in peace and the lyrics about that connection with someone is easily relatable.

I like this. Calm sounding even though the subject matter may not be. It’s a damning message and pretty chilling. Honestly I don’t know if I would have ever gotten the message of the song if I hadn’t looked it up since I don’t make a conscious effort to decipher lyrics of songs usually, choosing to focus simply on how it sounds for the most part.

“It ain’t coca-cola. It’s rice” made me laugh though because of how his voice changes the first time.

Wow. Calm and relaxing. I like the vocals in the background. It’s enough to make you notice but it’s not the focal point of the track because the focal point is the track itself and how everything blends together. The ghostly voice kind of gives me chills in the good way and basically it’s just pretty. Picturing something in the sky/clouds from this. Very nice.

#26: Within Temptation - Our Solemn Hour
Recommended by: Psycho_Kenshin
Favorite Part: duh

Sharon den Adel’s voice is amazing as usual and I like the choir. This is one of the few songs on the list I have heard before so I am a little more familiar with it. Also one of the few songs I have in my library.

My gripe, or rather, minor complaint, with Within Temptation is that while Sharon is spectacular, the music itself is kind of subpar and kind of lacking. I’m afraid I can’t articulate exactly what’s missing. The song seems a bit…excessive, like there’s too much going on and while I love certain songs for exactly the same reason, it doesn’t do it for me here. There are other bands that I have the same problem with (Rilo Kiley, Nightwish) and Symph Metal in general seems to carry this sentiment around with it. But there are tracks which I absolutely adore from those bands and in the case of WT, from this album (The Howling, Final Destination). I guess the difference between this track and Howling/Final Destination is that it doesn’t have a part where Sharon’s screaming her lungs out/dragging the words really showing off her voice and I miss that.

Apparently, this is not the full version. I’ll admit I never knew the name of this song and as soon as it kicked in, I was like ‘oh’. That beat though. Very chill atmosphere. But there’s a looming sense of intensity. It can seem like just random words at times though but it’s still pretty cool.

Also it’s really easy to make up words to the song. And who could forget incarceration/penetration. Fun to sing along to.

Is dat sum brass I hear in the background?! This sounds like a parade folky song and it’s really easy to keep listening to this imagining myself in some meadow/plain somewhere. Vocalist sounds slurred like he’s drunk on the music and I think this qualifies as something intoxicating enough to do it. Wonderful stuff. But then at around 4:32 it fades out and goes into something entirely different! I don’t know if that’s just part of the next track or something though…

I would normally say I don’t like these kinds of songs but something’s different about this one. It’s simple. Bubbly and I feel like I’m in some dream world. It’s a very surreal effect that the song has. Vocals are limited here but they work. They’re not remarkable but I’m fine with the way it is.

What’s remarkable to me about this track is that I think this is one of the few tracks on the list that I feel fit a bunch of different moods. Obviously people have different moods and sometimes even if you love certain artists/tracks/albums, it just doesn’t do any good if it doesn’t fit your mood. It’s the strongest argument for diversity in musical taste aside from for the sake of diversity itself to me. That being said, I don’t have to file this under just one of my mood folders. I could listen to it when I’m feeling happy as **** or when I’m down and feeling like ****. It just has this quality about it where it can be molded to exactly what I want to hear when I’m feeling a certain way and that’s pretty awesome.

This was whatever for the first 41 seconds. And then the vocals kicked in and I was blown away. The floodgates opened and it was glorious. Of course the second time around I knew what I was getting so it made even the first part remarkable. Kind of reminds me of Tegan and Sara as far as the voice goes and I really like her voice and how she stresses the words. The beat is not something I’m too crazy about and by itself wouldn’t really be worth nothing for me but because I like the song a lot, it eventually transforms into an essential part of the song that I couldn’t do without.

I disagree that WT's music is at all subpar or lacking, but hey. Rank 17 ain't bad, it ain't legal and it ain't bad folks.

Favorite Part: the humming

Is dat sum brass I hear in the background?! This sounds like a parade folky song and it’s really easy to keep listening to this imagining myself in some meadow/plain somewhere. Vocalist sounds slurred like he’s drunk on the music and I think this qualifies as something intoxicating enough to do it. Wonderful stuff. But then at around 4:32 it fades out and goes into something entirely different! I don’t know if that’s just part of the next track or something though…

nope the end is just part of the song
