XD I was exactly the same not even a year ago. It's actually quite simple.

Turn the nob on the top to 450 degrees. Wait for the light to confirm that the oven is pre-heated.

You put it on 450 degrees, hit cook/bake/whatever and let it heat up until it beeps (assuming it was made in the last like 15 years).

By doing this, you have achieved a temperature of 450 degrees before you put anything in. Thus, preheating the oven.

You turn the oven onto Bake and set it to 450 (use the arrows for a digital interface, a knob if you have a gas one) and wait for the preheat light to go off (or on depending...)

errr it might take a while 10 minutes or something.

Okay so you roam around for a bit until the world map gets shattered/fizzles out/some animation happens.

Then you'll notice that on the battle screen there is a giant enemy called O-V-E-N. Now what you have to do is buff your party up with whichever spells you have at the time, it is an early fight so it depends on your party at the time.

Then you just do a lot of burst damage and on the side you'll notice that there is a little meter showing you how much heat the oven is at. Now if you relent in a round it'll actually go down, and if you take too long the O-V-E-N actually explodes so you have to pre-heat it before 15 turns pass, but it isn't too hard if you bought any upgrades for your party.

When it pre-heats it'll slump over and you are done.

And that's how you pre-heat an oven in dragon quest.

I grew up with people always using an oven for me. No one ever told me "you have to learn how to use an oven now." Well... except for my most recent girlfriend. Who finally made me learn thankfully.

Now I'm a master at using an oven.

I have never liked heat/fire. I was afraid of using an oven for my childhood (although I was afraid of damn near everything else as well). So for a long time, i thought using an oven was like... something you had to be good at or something.

Then when I was finally forced to learn it I was like... oh, that's actually really f***ing easy.

I'll admit that when I went to college, I had to be shown how to use a washing machine, but come on, an oven? It's not exactly complicated.

* There's one control on an oven, a big knob that makes it turn on. It's lined with numbers for temperatures. Therefore, turning this knob must be what makes the oven go, and you know what temperature to go to.
* Pre-heat means heat in advance, or at least that's what it sounds like. So rather than just shoving the thing in ahead of time like you would in a microwave, you heat it up first, just like you would on the stove.

The oven being used for storage space, I understand, though. And the "drawer" underneath the oven? Yeah, uh, what's a broiler? At my parent's house, we didn't have one of those, but we had ample cabinets. Now we have one of these "broiler" things and that's where we put all our pans.

Anyway, keep in mind that ovens don't turn off like microwaves do, so take whatever your baking out when the time's right. Or if you're cooking something without a prescribed time, like a meatloaf, check on it periodically. It's easy to forget.

Sounds like your oven is really old. Mine is controlled digitally and has a lot of buttons and stuff. Bake/Broil/ etc.

Oh you got us, we were not, in fact, born knowing how to operate an oven as had been suggested.

It's quite a task on my oven to hit "Bake", choose a temperature, press "Start" and then wait for the word "PRE" to go away.

It can be pretty easy depending on your parental situation. I never had to use a washing machine until I was in college.

Or we just watched other people use these things, and then guessed on whatever bits we were unsure about.

My only mistake was leaving a metal fork on my waffles I was microwaving, though in my defense, I did this before the hundreds of YouTube videos of similar things (also MythBusters).
