I'm talking about stereotypical characters found in just about every jRPG game I have come across, that are pretty much identical to anime characters.

- Stereotypical loner/brooding badass
- Stereotypical clumsy, dimwitted girlfriend/sidekick
- Stereotypical idiot main character
- Stereotypical pet/animal/creature that talks
- Anything involving tears flowing like waterfalls
- Anything related to anime drawing (I don't know why they can't draw subtle facial movements and must over-draw everything [large mouths for shocked, X'd out eyes for dead/drunk, etc]).

Pretty much whatever you would find in a typical japanese anime series is what I don't want to find in a RPG.

Basically, stay the hell away from Wild ARMs and Suikoden, be wary around main-line FF games which tend to be a melting pot, and I guess don't play Valkyrie Profile because the Valkyries have wings and feathers.

Gameplaywise it matches a certain style of JRPG (the dungeon crawl crossed with the SRPG).

Art and storyline-wise it's very western, which is why it seems a good recommendation here.

SMT in general doesn't really trope the genre much. shadow hearts too. half of your complaints are about animation style that are so minor you have a hard time not finding a western equivalent of anyway. archtypes meanwhile exist in both. >__>;

Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

Soul is a man after my own heart with these criticisms of the genre. Spot-on with how I feel. I find its tropes incredibly irritating.

Pity Soul is still utterly buried as a human being because he WELCHED ON THE SIG BET.

the genre has repetition in it like any other in its substance, sure. some series don't really do 'em much though. pretty sure shadow hearts was another outlier of the genre, radiant historia definitely was, infinite space definitely was, legend of heroes: trails in the sky definitely was, etc.

of course a lot of those take on a bit of an anime style to 'em which isn't exactly surprising as it's a region art style and ranges from kaiba, one piece, or macross frontier. hell there's an anime about a cat that's very circular right now. anything involving sprites ends up being 'anime style' now just by virtue of anime already have done everything there. or games where your interaction is with portraits (those always have to be cartoon-like).

I figured he was talking about the typical shounen hot-headed, brash, oblivious type of character.

Shion's just kind of a b**** in XS2 and 3 (mostly 3).

But the series has Albedo and KOS-MOS, so I figured I'd recommend it.

she's a robot chick who's half naked in high heels and can do no wrong. yes, she's a very typical anime character. not all are robots. nonetheless, she's definitely one of 'em. xenosaga makes itself very clear it's an anime rpg in pretty much everything.

Persona 4 imo, the only tropes that fit is the talking creature.

And the anime style I guess, but the SMT artstyle is really different though.

nah, persona fits the X for eyes thing. but that's just such a minor thing that who cares. it's not like it's abusing that. just comes with the way it's done as a series. of course the other SMT entries like Devil Summoner or Nocturne stray even further from it.

'x for eyes' goes hand in hand with teardrop or the three lines you'll find.

unless he means like the cheery/angry one as opposed to 'dead'. but not sure that even makes sense as most games don't have that.

Vagrant Story is my favourite RPG, Saro, and it's really unconventional in a ton of ways, but Ashley kind of is your stereotypical badass loner with a murky past.

That said, it's a better recommendation than most.

completely depends how far your issues with anime stuff are for everything else; infinte space certainly matches the art and story to an extent, but no more than your standard 'space pirate' situation. lead character doesn't fit the trope of 'lead jrpg character' at all however.

The last two are anime style but otherwise check out.

Also Xenoblade is an obvious mention. It doesn't really defy the character/story clichés, but it puts a new spin on them to make them fresh again, while completely reinventing the wheel in most other aspects. Also it's currently the top-ranked JRPG ever on Gamerankings.
