I can see why people like Earthbound, but what you described... isn't Earthbound. Earthbound is involved, you equip each individual party member and manage their health as it slowly crawls down, more often than not at the brink of death unless you do some really fast management. There's a lot more thought put into how you stack your characters and what items you give them as opposed to 'kay, healer and mage in back row, strong guys in front, add my favorite character as a wild card' since your characters are always forced in a set arrangement of turns. A simple RPG would be something like Dragon Warrior or one of the Final Fantasies before IV where you can just take your time and do whatever. But Pokemon feels like you'd encounter jerks like Misty and Gary who are better than you and you want to put them in their place, and ultimately makes it more relateable to the expectations a child might have on the world. Earthbound is just OHMYGODRUNAWAYFIVESOAWESOME OHGODBLUEPEOPLESHOOTINGLIGHTNINGBUTTHISBADGEISSOFREAKINGAWESOMEREFLECTSIT YEAHSCREWYOUPOKEYHOWDAREYOUBECOMEPRESIDENTOFSOMETHINGYELLOWSUBARINEWHOO. Which, I mean, is cool. Earthbound's backdrop is awesome. But just the whole concept of it isn't grounded in reality; it uses the backdrop of reality to make the weird aspects in the game seem weirder. And since Earthbound is full of weird aspects from top to bottom, it works incredibly well. And since Earthbound is full of weird aspects from top to bottom, it works incredibly well. It's just not solidly on its feet in a human experience until you fight Giygas and stuff.You seem to be judging more on the actual plot and believability of the character interaction.
