I don't think I hold him up to those expectations because I don't really feel he's the main character ("lead of the opposite gender" doesn't carry the same fine tradition in the series to me, although again there are some very good ones in there). Rosa's pretty terrible from a writing standpoint, her entire character centres around her relationship to male characters. Kinda embarrassing actually. (Good PC of course but yeah.) I dunno if I agree with the comments about sexists from Square more recently but in FF4? Ohhh my yes, it was bad. Take a drink every time the game tries to reinforce traditional gender roles, pass out before Cecil even turns Paladin. and the top 6 are if you want to stretch the truth a bit and call Balthier FFXII's lead!). Okay this I really can't see. I'll give you Cloud and Squall and if I squint I can see Tidus and Snow though I don't think they're even the best characters in their games (still good).
