meanwhile Yao Ming was discussing his thoughts about Jeremy Lin:

"What I see from Jeremy and what I hear in his interviews is he appreciates everything. He pursues his dream. His attitude is so peaceful, but there is strength to him. It is not a violent strength like fire or something aggressive. It is like the ocean, very peaceful, very quiet when you look at it. But you can never underestimate the power that is in there."

Why do I get a Bruce Lee vibe from that quote?

For me it's really overall the idea of corruption and the shattering of the illusion of perfection/goodness. The subject in question doesn't have to literally be 'perfect' in appearance but when you take something that's supposed to be cute and it just subverts your expectation based on their appearance, it's just ****ing hot and you just want to do terrible terrible things to it because you are a bad bad man.

Anecdotal evidence, but I feel like the main reason the US is considered 'racist' is because the country actually openly talks about any potential racism problems the second it arises. We're ridiculously self-critical here. Europe seems content to sweep any problems under the rug and call it fine.

Unfortunately, many parts of Europe and Asia are still really racist and think of black people as sub-humans. The stuff soccer fans outside England and Ireland often say about black players will put what this chick said to shame, too. It's really sad.

don't take what goes on in football out of context

it is racism technically, but it's only used to hit the player where it hurts because they hate the player (or team), not the race. It's like how we keep making JP fat jokes while there's plenty of other overweight people here. It's because it's easy. Not the same thing as thinking black people are sub-human

but you take everything out of context anyway

ps I never do things like this and I don't even wanna justify it, just saying not everything is black and white thank you

It's not just because he's Asian. Certainly, being Asian has a lot to do with it, as he's only the second ethnically east Asian player to really light up the NBA (Yao was first), but Lin's situation differs from Yao's. Yao Ming was a superstar from the moment he got here. Everyone expected him to be good and he was. Lin came out of nowhere. He's also a born again Christian who carries himself very well (gettin dat Tebow love), and he has overcome obstacles to get where he is. It's a story that anyone can appreciate and root for, and not just because of his ethnicity.

Dude I have nothing against Europe and I'm seriously considering moving there, but pretending you guys aren't OVERTLY racist is just not a conversation you should ever have. It's hardly a soccer-only problem.

I am not denying the fact that Europeans are very clingy and conservative when it comes to culture. I'm saying there's certain degrees of racism and calling for genocide on black people is not the same as a slur used in a soccer match. it's also not the same as thinking black people (or whatever race) are sub-human.

Ps again I am completely not racist and couldn't care less if a football player (or whoever) was black or not. I couldn't care less about football in general. I'm just posting the trail of thought of other europeans here
