It comes back to what I was saying the other day about Football fans being the most passionate in the world but that passion is so over the top it comes at the cost of a total, complete loss of perspective. It is passion to the point they do not understand where the line is.
For an American example, look at MWC. He is incredibly passionate. That shouldn't be denied, but the trap is that passion is purely a good thing - MWC's level of passion that isn't something you wear as a badge of honour. Nobody should ever, ever be that passionate. It's too much of a good thing - everything has to be in moderation, even something like "passion" that people constantly laud as a good thing. It's great to be passionate but only to an extent, just like...absolutely everything else in the world.
Black footballer defends racist chanting because the goal is not true racism - the goal is to hurt. And it's bad that those people don't appreciate what the line is, but they're stupid. The average person is stupid, there are more football fans than any other sport, go figure.
I would say John Terry is the same (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16284813) - he's a classless, cockney idiot with an awful upbringing. So he insults Anton Ferdinand not because he's racist but because he has no moral problem with crossing that line.

This reminds me of my Western European politics class in college where our professor was arguing "France isn't racist, they just hate immigrants!"
He then admitted that the French image of an immigrant is somebody who isn't a white christian. So if you were white and could speak French well nobody would think of you as an immigrant, whereas if you were dark skinned but your family had been there for a century, you should be kicked out.
