Buying hitmen and assassins? So many drugs? Hackers, lab supplies, credit cards? Any number of awful other things I don't want to post about for fear of immediately getting flagged by every government agency ever to exist, ever?

Seriously, I'm glad I only function in the normal part of the internet. But then again I was a lot happier thinking that 100% of the internet was above board and that 4chan was the worst of it. Knowing that 95% of the internet is in this shady realm is a bit worrisome.

As dangerous as the internet can be, I highly doubt it's even half, let alone this high.

Yeah. I wonder why the governments don't do anything despite that everyone can access the deep web with a little work.

An estimate of how big the deep web was in 2001: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Web#Size
An estimate by Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google: http://www.wisegeek.com/how-big-is-the-internet.htm

The deep web was estimated at being around 92,000 TB in 2001 (and it's undoubtedly grown so many times over since then), whereas even last year Google had only indexed around 200 TB of the internet.

Maybe I was actually underestimating the percentage.

"Deep web" just refers to sites that aren't accessible by web crawlers like the ones google uses, right?

Doesn't seem like a big deal

Yeah, deep web is not as eerie as it sounds. Hell, I've created "deep web" products. Any web service that uses url or post parameters to fill SQL queries could be classified as "deep web." The product I worked on was access to a subscription pharmaceutical database backend. Fascinating stuff, I know.

The government needs to hack into the server.

That's always the answer in the movies.

Umm... I haven't heard anything about this at all. I mean, I can go a day without the internet, but if Anon legitimately shuts down the entire web for a day? I'm not sure it would do much good. I could see it polarizing the population to either side of the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/PCfIPA debate. And I think that's a dangerous step to take, because most people are stupid and will lump Anon in with the people these bills oppose and will side with legislators.

But then again it probably won't happen.

That would be interesting to see.

Their plan seems alright in theory, but that's all it is. No one has actually done it before as far as I can tell, and probably for a good reason, like that the people who manage the DNS know way more about their system than 4chan nerds.

Each one is multiple computers with some being on multiple continents. And together they basically allow you to access other websites so if thats what you mean by backbone then yes.

Even their description of it says they're not doing that, they'd just be disabling URLs. If you put the IP address of a website in, it would still work.
