Huge night tonight for the Western Conference. It's a good day to be a Colorado, Phoenix, or Calgary fan as they have the "easiest" games tonight. Colorado Vs. Phoenix and Calgary Vs. Minnesota. The other teams in the "Superb Six"© have some rough games coming up. Dallas Vs. Vancouver, Los Angeles Vs. St Louis, and San Jose Vs. Boston.

Fans of every team is hoping for a 2 point game in the Avs/Coyotes game, and they're obviously cheering for all other teams in the "Superb Six"© to lose outright.

Good news for Avs today. Doan is suspended, and won't be in tonight's game. Also some good news for Dallas is that Daniel Sedin is injured and most likely won't play tonight.

They have a goalie that's capable of stealing an entire series... that's pretty much all you need in the playoffs sometimes. I shouldn't have to point that out to you after Halak.

And I think they're just talented offensively enough to win off the strength of their goaltender.

Oh yeah, totally, a great goalie can steal a series. Sometimes even two. RARELY three. But to actually win the cup you better have someone who can actually score.

And seriously, Rinne isn't THAT good. He's very good. Top tier. But he's not significantly better than the other guys up there to include Lundqvist, Fleury, Quick, and pre-crisis Thomas, hell even lolungo is just about as good.

And yet, Mike Smith is having an even better year this year than Bryz did last year and it's not even close really.

You saw the same thing when Vokoun left Nashville. Rinne, previously unknown, came in and did even better. And then when Vokoun left Florida, well, I don't have the numbers handy, but they're certainly a better team this year with Theodore and the Caps are worse with him (although it's not REALLY his fault).

As the board's resident Nashville/Rinne fan I feel the need to chime in. I'll simply say that if I'm given an NHL team and the opportunity to have any goalie in the world play for it then I pick either Rinne or Lundqvist. Rinne plays behind the best top D pairing in the league but he's still a beast. Assuming Finland isn't moronic again and decides that having Rinne on their team would be a good idea then it will be interesting to see how he performs in 2014 assuming NHL players are involved.

Well, given the age and raw talent, I'd say that's fairly reasonable. I'd throw out Quick, Halak, and yes, even Luongo as reasonable alternatives though.

The thing with Rinne is that I think he actually underachieves his talent. Given the defensive team he plays behind, there's really no excuse for him not having the best ratios in the league, and he never has. In recent years hes been shown up by the likes of Thomas and Luongo, and this year he's gonna get smoked by the Blues goalies and Quick and Lundqvist.

In order to be considered a candidate for "best goalie in the league" shouldn't he actually be the best goalie in the league at least one year?

One of the most entertaining scoreless ties I've ever seen! You shootout apologists are nuts, the shootout was the least exciting part of that game.

Always nice to have a winning record against the best team in the conference. Absolutely not afraid of a 1-8 matchup against St. Louis. In fact, I'd rather have that then a 2-7 against Vancouver or even a 3-6 against Nashville/Chicago/Detroit.

So, let's talk about Quick for a second.

This guy is almost certainly the most underrated player in the league. You can EASILY make the argument that he's been the best goalie in the entire league over the last three years, but he NEVER gets the credit he deserves and it's absolutely outrageous. Every year in the pre-season, the team previews for the Kings read the exact same: "Well sure, Quick did pretty good last year, but THIS YEAR the Kings will obviously look to give Bernier more games because he's the future!" And they usually TRY to do just that, until it is made glaringly obvious to everyone who actually watches.... that Quick is just plain BETTER than Bernier. Period. It's not that Bernier isn't ready and needs more time to develop. He's just plain not as good. I don't know WHY the hockey media refuses to accept this. Maybe it's a Canadian/American thing? Maybe it's because Bernier was a hyped prospect and Quick sorta came outta nowhere? Maybe it's because most of them are on the east coast and never stay up for Pacific division games?

Whatever it is, it's idiotic. They should absolutely trade Bernier while everyone still stupidly thinks this guy is the second coming of Martin Brodeur. They will almost certainly get more for him than he's worth no matter WHO they deal him to. Quick has had three absolutely outstanding years and seems to still be getting better. And yet, he remains the Rodney Dangerfield of the NHL...

Before next season starts, go to all the hockey websites and read their "team previews" and I guarantee you EVERY site for their Kings preview will mention something about Bernier getting more playing time because they need to groom him to be ready to become the full-time starter.
