I remember when I was a kid I was prescribed this stuff that I could drop into my ears and let sit for a while and then flush out to get rid of whatever was in there... I don't remember how well it worked, but I feel I'm due for another cleaning. Is it possible to get that type of stuff without a prescription?

Are you supposed to do more than simply use Q-tips regularly?

q-tips are technically not supposed to be used for cleaning in your ear canal, the box usually says not to do that

Qtips are the WORST thing for ears. I impacted both my eardrums that way.

But yes, you can buy ear cleaning kits at any supermarket or walmart type place. It's just some drops and a ball syringe for you to squirt water in there to dislodge the wax. Works wonders.

I'm going to continue using Q-tips even with this information that using them is on par with playing with mercury.

Q-tips are great for cleaning the OUTSIDE of your ear...just not...the inside

I'd imagine something like a chainsaw or hot cattle brand would be worse, but I'm clearly no expert here.

your eardrum is like

3 cells thick

rupturing it takes...not much effort.

plus a q-tip can act like a battering ram, shoving earwax further into your ear.

not. best. idea.

You probably shouldn't be jamming Q-tips so far into your ear that you rupture your ear drum.

QTips are necessary for a good surface cleaning. Some people, however, produce more wax than others and over time, need to clean it out; A QTip is not how you do that. Buy one of those kits. I actually had to see a doctor because the kit wasn't working, but he said it helped loosen it up a lot. I filled a bowl with the most atrocious wax-water ever.

these things are awesome, you light the tip of it on fire, lay down, and hold it in your ear and it sucks out all the earwax/crap.
You do need someone else to keep an eye on it though and make sure your head doesn't catch on fire...

If any of you guys go farther than your pinky can go with your Q-tips you,re doing it wrong.

Personally I just fill my ears with water when I'm in the shower, '' fold '' my ear, apply a pressure and clean again.

Seems to work.

nothing will happen if you aren't stupid about it! Just do what the instructions say and you'll be fine! I've used like 50 and and they always relieve my ear pain/earwax trouble and have had no injury
