Basically, they don't want the PPV to go over the time limit, since PPV providers only provide a certain amount of time for the show. If it goes over, then the feed gets cut off, and we are stuck not knowing what happened. Though now that I think about it, didn't WCW actually broadcast the Goldberg/DDP match on ESPN or CNN right after the PPV was cut off? It would have been SO much better to just let them go out there and work as long as they wanted to and just have it end in a pinfall whenever they organically got there. There's absolutely no need to protect Bret with the time limit thing. Yeah I know he probably demanded it but ** that. EDIT: Although to say something more positive about it, it was the best WM main event ever until X-Seven. So, it was the culmination of a 2 year journey, and that was the only way to put over Shawn like they did. Have him end in the Sharpshooter for over a minute without tapping, they can't do that in a normal match. But with the hour long time limit they could. It gave Shawn this aura, and then when he hits double SCM, BANG. No build up in Wrestling history has ever been capped like that was, none of them. There is not a single way to book those four into two main event matches that I would be satisfied with. He goads Trips into trying to make everything better through the year and constantly berates him with how hes not good enough, nothing he does can even COMPARE to when he and Trips were the topdogs (Austin doesnt exist in kayfabe during this) and he challenges Trips to a match at Mania to remind him of what GOOD wrestling programs look like. Trips tries to refuse by playing heel to the crowd ( for being a coward) yet face to the smarks saying this shouldn't be about Trips and Rock, for the good of the future of the company which HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR, Punk and Jericho need to be the stars not he and Rock.
