sheamus/dragon is one of those matches where you just don't feel a feud between two people. there's dragon and an unmovable force going his way, but you don't really feel anything from either on 'em to the feud because it... really doesn't feel like one. even the reason sheamus has is 'i'm just gonna knock you off a peg and bring you down to your senses.'

dragon meanwhile doesn't particularly care much for another big competitor because he's the man. that's how they've built the characters, so yeah. if what you care about matches falls under relationship between two people, it's the wrong setup for you. fortunately i don't care for that so much unless it's done really, really well. which ain't the case this WM for anyone but Punk/Jericho and Cody/Show. problem there is uh... it's not ending at WM for either of those guys.


and it's one of the matches i most look forward to because the only match likely to be better is punk/jericho. and even then it's like 50/50 to which will be the superior one. unless the 6 man surprises somehow, that's... really it.

DB vs. Sheamus is probably in reality SLIGHTLY better than Orton/Kane, but I am amused by Orton/Kane's build on a meta-textual level.

The four meaningful main-events, two perennial main eventers slumming it against each other, an actual well-built IC Title match, a big multi-man schmozz, and a throwaway Divas tag match.

It's like a poor man's WM XIX, which is still a pretty good thing to be.

I just like how three of the four main events have someone who hasn't been a regular wrestler in the past year.

Jericho showed up in January.
Taker showed up a few weeks ago.
Trips only wrestles every once in a while.
Rock does some scattered promo work, but has only the Survivor Series match in the past few years.

Only DBD/Sheamus has two guys that have been around all year and yet that's the worst built match. How does that happen?

Jericho vs. Punk WOULD be my #2 if they didn't needlessly take a turn for the melodrama.

It doesn't kill the angle because I still think it's something juicy that could have been used down the line to enhance another feud or to build to a rematch, it's just unnecessary right now.

Contrast that with Taker vs. Trips which has a ridiculous premise as a foundation, but somehow they've managed to prop up a solid structure on top of it, with just the right amount of bells and whistles to hide their inevitable shortcomings without turning things into an overbooked circus.

Still a week to change that though! <_<

With the rumors out there that Punk vs. Jericho could actually OPEN the show, are you okay with that if it means no time constraints, or would you just rather see them get their due up near the main event even if it means that any time crunch is gonna come down on their match?

I'm personally fine with a match listing of:

Punk vs. Jericho
Cody vs. Show
Orton vs. Kane
Johnny vs. Teddy
Taker vs. Trips
Kelly/Menounos vs. Beth/Eve
Sheamus vs. DB
Cena vs. Rock

You can shift around the order of the matches that aren't the four main events, but I think putting them in those 4 spots will ultimately be the best for everyone.

It only really came across as melodramatic and unnecessary to me at the beginning when Jericho showed up on the titantron to talk about Punk's dad being an alcoholic. I feel they followed up on it really nicely the next week and made it work. Jericho's being a prick to get under his opponent's skin, which feels right up his alley. I was honestly bored and disinterested in the build before Jericho made it personal.

I have not heard that rumor, but I'd be fine with it if that was the only way they could get the time they need for the match. It's the match I'm looking forward to the most at Wrestlemania, so if it ends up feeling rushed, that could very well ruin the whole event for me. My only real concern with it curtain-jerking is that the first match of the night is the one I'm most prone to missing. I still haven't seen Edge vs Del Rio.

As far as my number two match, AmDrag vs Great White, I'd be fine with that being rushed so long as Daniel Bryan wins. The "feud" has been nothing to care about, and I basically just don't want D-Bry's title reign to end on a rushed match capping off a non-existent feud.

that rumor is unsurprising. punk wanted to legit ME WM, over Rock/Cena. that meant 2 things: either next to last spot which is hell, or open the card to punish him. but if they do that with the stipulation that he and jericho can take their time in the match and have a higher time limit than they would otherwise? then that'd work as the best middle ground they could work. he can score the best match at that WM which isn't the same, but a good enough replacement.

What would your pick for the best build be then?

This one has a clearly established motive for both guys, some creative humor that is genuinely building heat for Cody, and both guys are looking strong heading into the match.

It's really the only truly successful build from a classical standpoint, in that Cody has been a real major piece of **** towards Show and you genuinely want to see Show destroy the little f***er.

Punk/Jericho KIND of has this. Teddy/Johnny KIND of has this. The rest of the builds are all based around foggier motives.

It's not that they would necessarily have a higher time limit, it's just that they would no longer be under the gun if anything else goes long and something towards the end of the show that's NOT Trips/Taker or Rock/Cena has to be crunched to compensate.

Dolph and JoMo suffered that fate last year. Their entire segment of the mixed tag got nixed entirely due to time constraints.

hey now it's fairly arguable that punk/orton was a better match than edge/del rio.

i never really understood wwe's stance on ppv time limits. they always do under 3 hours no problem. you'd think they'd let somebody do 5 minutes more because they won't hit that point.

I recall at least a couple PPVs in the last year that just made it with like 5 minutes to go.

It's really just covering their asses. They want to book the show to end between 10:45 and 10:50 (Eastern time) and they work throughout the show to make sure that they stay on that pace, and that when the main event begins, it can get as much time as it was budgeted for and still end in that range.

And then they have 10+ minutes of buffer time in case something ridiculously unforeseen delays any part of the main event (fan run-in, lighting issues, crowd being so heated that the wrestlers need extra stalling time to properly ease them into the meat of the match, broken turnbuckle, minor earthquake, etc).

So yeah, under normal circumstances they could give the undercard a little more time and then just start the main event with its allotted time set to end between 10:55 and 11:00, but they just want to be 100% certain that absolutely nothing could put them in the position to have to rush the main event.

Oh please, it's only the 4th best match of 1996 WWF!

It would have been SO much better to just let them go out there and work as long as they wanted to and just have it end in a pinfall whenever they organically got there. There's absolutely no need to protect Bret with the time limit thing. Yeah I know he probably demanded it but **** that.

EDIT: Although to say something more positive about it, it was the best WM main event ever until X-Seven.
