People could simply... Donate under a different reason? Donating JUST because you don't like an ending to a game and hoping it'll do something is missing the point.

I mean, like

I get that principles are important and if you think one group is trying too hard to make other people look bad (Seriously, you're donating to charity in the name of ME3's ending being s***, what is that) you should tell them to stow it.

But you don't involve the children in this.

really though, Child's Play has become the go-to "we need to attach some kind of token charity to our video game-related movement so that people pay attention to us" when there are better charities out there. I like that The Speed Gamers always pick different charities

Explanation on reddit, and it seems this decision had less to do with Mass Effect itself and more with the potential slippery slope precedent Retake Mass Effect has set up to pull the same stunt for non-video-game issues:

http://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/r93jo/retake_mass_effect_fund_raiser_under_attack_by/

"Hi everyone!

I wanted to hop in and give a little bit of first-hand insight into what has happened, and what is going through our minds regarding this fundraiser. First and foremost, I want to express our absolute appreciation to everyone who supports us - whether it is through Retake Mass Effect or directly, we greatly appreciate your support.

The Retake Mass Effect fundraiser has been unprecedented in a few ways for us, and we've been discussing the whole thing extensively as an organization. For the past week or so, we've received quite a bit of email regarding the fundraiser. It ranged from those wanting to verify the legitimacy of the fundraiser (something we're always happy to discuss!), accusing us of capitalizing on the emotions of fans, appreciation for allowing the group to unite under a positive cause- it ran the gamut in terms of sentiments. While we did receive some negative mail regarding the drive, I can assure you our decision was not about bowing to pressure from anyone- corporate, individual, or otherwise. The real concern on our end was the slippery slope that attaching causes to fundraising for Child's Play can create. While RME had the best of intentions and was overwhelmingly generous, it shed light on an issue that we needed to address.

For example, if someone took a hotly debated political issue and said "Donate to Child's Play to support [insert issue here]", it could cause some very serious problems for us. Clearly what Retake Mass Effect is doing is in no way negative- like I said, it pointed out a dangerous precedent for others to use the charity for agendas we clearly do not support. We're taking a step back and looking at our policies to see what we can do to still appreciate and support the community while avoiding implications of Child's Play being attached to other causes.

We care deeply about the game community, and work very hard to connect and collaborate with those who support us."

If the ME3 idiots actually cared about the children, they can easily donate to a DIFFERENT childrens charity.

That's what they're trying to do:

It just seems like a really odd thing to try to deny involvement with.

Like, I could understand if someone did actually drag politics into this, but it's just a bunch of nerds ranting about how much the ending to their trilogy sucked. There are worse things to be associated with, and it's not like it's dirty money.

It's a preemptive measure. They don't think there's anything particularly wrong with Retake Mass Effect but want to draw the line here so there's some distance away from the real hot button issues.

Those guys are idiots anyways. They basically gave EA and Bioware Carte blanche to sell the ending of a game as DLC, because I doubt it's gonna be a free update.

Why would it be free? A new ending would have to be nearly 100% new content that was not originally planned to be in the game or accounted for in the original development costs. That's about as justified as you can get for charging for DLC.

How in the hell could anyone possibly claim that New Ending DLC should be free? I mean I absolutely despise how DLC is often a rip-off... but you're going to request they get to work on an entirely new ending just because you're unsatisfied, and expect to get this for free? What the f***.

I don't see how there could be a problem with this, because if you have to actually trick a fundraiser to accept your money they obviously aren't supporting your agenda.
