That's the way the Internet should be though.

Keep my grandparents off this sacred ground and leave it to the people who can stomach it.

If I had just said the word **** (oh god, banned!) in high school the majority of my teachers wouldn't have even said anything beyond "don't say that" or "watch your language" or something, even the strictest ones hearing it wouldn't have gotten me in much trouble.

This is definitely possible, and it goes to show you the problems with letting government involve themselves so much in education.

Sure, you can get a "free" computer, but now you don't have any freedoms when using that computer. Good trade, right?

It's reasonable to put restrictions on school-issued equipment. Putting a restriction such as "no profanity" is probably going overboard, but it's not like anyone should expect to be able to do anything they want on something loaned to them for schoolwork.

Is this a private school, though? If it is, then I am fine with it, but the problem comes when it's a public school.

SOMEONE has to pay for the computers, right? Just because the kids are given "free" computers doesn't mean they are free. The government forcefully collects money from the people in the form of taxes, and then uses that money to buy computers for the kids.

Now, in THAT case, there should be no restrictions at all on the computers, because they are publicly funded.

Assuming they aren't forced to use the computer in some way, I don't see how that isn't a fair deal. If you don't like the terms of use for the rented computer you can opt not to use it.

Or should there. I mean in most localities porn is illegal to look at if youre under 18. So if hes using a publicly funded computer to break the laws that the taxpayers have voted people into office to pass, then isn't it the governments duty to enforce those laws so that the taxpayer isnt literally financing crime.

That has nothing to do with whether the computer is publicly funded or not. If a kid if looking at porn on his own computer or a school's computer, it's illegal and he/his parents would be punished.
Same if he was buying a baby or drugs or something. It's illegal everywhere, no matter what computer you're on.

The difference with the tweet thing is that it's not against the law.

I could throw my personal laptop out of my window if I want, and there's nothing illegal about that.

I think if you're a tax payer, you'd want to make sure the people getting laptops are restricted from doing harmful things to the equipment.

I know the swearing wasn't harmful to the equipment, but your point was that they shouldn't be able to tell you what to do at all.

I think it's reasonable to restrict things like websites you visit, software you install, etc. They have the potential to harm the computer.

But there SHOULD be restrictions on them. Because they are publicly funded you should be forced to adhere to all laws and school policies.

A public school district is a political entity. You pay them taxes and you have the right to run for school board and to be a part of the policy-making process on the local level. If I were a parent in this district and disagreed with it I would be at the school raising hell. If there were enough parents making a fuss the policies would change or not be enforced so stupidly. And that actually looks like its happening here given the hub-bub. Who do you think alerted the media?

Fair enough, but I'd still have to ask what school has the resources to go and monitor every single tweet on their end, not to mention this creates other obvious security problems since they should still not be able to line up twitter activity exactly unless they're effectively mounting man-in-the-middle attacks which would just paint a HUGE target on your network. It means you effectively have a few hundred-odd passwords and are a very low security target. Like, Anon-level hackers can easily break into the level of security most school networks have.

People SHOULD be able to throw their publicly-funded computers out the window. Of course this is a waste of money, and the solution isn't to add restrictions, but to not take taxes to buy computers for people.

But who decided to buy the computers? There may have been some kind of state level grant, but in all likelihood it was a local decision to spend money that way, restrictions and all. In fact I could see some parents, you know the types, who would INSIST on those kinds of restrictions to help further control their children's lives.
