On a bit of a Sonic binge lately, and want to get a feel for how B8 feels about this series. And by "series" I mean "2D platformers up to and including CD." My rankings:
I never liked any of them for some reason. I played a few worlds of each up to Sonic 3&K just because the music and visuals were cool enough to keep me interested, but I've always hated the gameplay of Sonic. I don't think I could ever say I've had "fun" with a Sonic game.
...which is odd because I loved the hell out of Speedy Gonzalez: Los Gatos Bandidos for the SNES. I guess the speed sections always seemed dumb to me, if it had more straight up platforming (like Speedy) I think I might have enjoyed the series more.

I take it you were a Mario guy growing up, then? I certainly was. I guess it comes down to action-platforming versus exploration-platforming.

Yeah, definitely. SMW is still up there with my all-time favourites. Same with the first two DKC games.
2 > 3&K > 1 > CD, but the parameters neglect other good and really good Sonic games; the former category including Sonic 3D Blast, The Sonic Chronicles and most of the handhelds, the latter including Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Generations.
-- If the Earth were a sandwich, we'd get along so well, And we could feed everybody, with a piece of ourselves.
Hell, you can ignore my parameters entirely if you feel there are other, better Sonic games. I know many people consider Advance 3 Genesis-quality, for example.
Music: Never really paid enough attention to music to properly rank anything. CD Bias probably causes me to rank it's American soundtrack best, but I'd have to actually listen to things to properly rank them and I'm too lazy to do so.
Also too lazy to rank everything. Generations > All, that's good enough.
-- In this world which will someday fall to ruin... ...dreams and hopes don't matter at all.
Generations>>Unleashed HD>Colours/Unleashed SD/SA2>2>S3&K>SAdv3>SAdv2>SA1>4/1>Sonic Heroes>SAdv1>Sonic Battle>Riders> Sonic CD>>>>>>>Shadow>>Sonic and the Secret Rings>Sonic R>Riders:ZG>Sonic Chronicles>>>Sonic 06
That should do it, not really sure about how I would rank the GG sonic games though.

I do because I can.....and because I'm bored. http://www.yourgamercards.net/trophy/a/Micer101.png
- Genesis games are good, but not stupid god tier - Sonic 3 & Knuckles definitely the best of them - Sonic Adventure was a shoddy mess, but SA2 was fantastic - Heroes wasn't that bad - Shadow the Hedgehog was bad, but not worst game ever material. - Sonic 2006 was Sonic 2006. - Unleashed suffered because 2006 and Shadow hurt reputation too badly.
Haven't played Colors or Generations yet.

sonic adventure games are garbage unleashed is alright colours is a solid b+ generations does not look good genesis games are among my favourite 2d games cd gets too much hate, though that's understandable

Sonic CD question for those more in the loop (lol get it):
So there's the bad ending when you don't get all the Time Stones, and then there's the good ending when you get all the Time Stones + good futures. But what if you only got all the Time Stones and not the good futures, or vice-versa? Is it still the bad ending? Some middle-ending? Google and GameFAQs are being surprisingly unhelpful here.
Sonic Adventure is pretty terrible. Sonic Adventure 2 ranges from "okay" to "blah." Sonic Advance 3 is decent-ish, but I've heard a lot of people call it great. Hmm. Sonic 2006 is so bad that it's funny. Sonic Unleashed HD ranges from "really damn fun" to "kind-of-tedious-but-still-better-than-the-weaker-bits-in-the-Adventure-games." It's not spectacular, but it gets a bad rap. It's also one of maybe two or three games this generation I've bothered 100%ing. Sonic Generations is ace from what I've played so far.
Never played CD, Advance 1 or 2, Heroes (other than the demo), Shadow, Unleashed SD, 4, or Colors.
Just played through the first world of Sonic CD on my iPhone. Impressions:
It's actually much better than I was expecting. Controls work well given the limited interface, and the bonus stages look and play great. What really makes this the extras: both the Japanese and US soundtracks are included, Tails is apparently playable, and there are four save slots! Really worth the five bucks for those who haven't played it yet.
