It looks like a simplified version of DMC, yeah. I guess that will grab some people, but it kinda turns me off, considering there are no shortage of simple action games out there. Seems to trying to be more cinematic, too.

I've downgraded this Dante's offensiveness level from abomination to gross. It seems like they've de-emoed him a bit as development went on.

It's still bad though. Knowing capcom they'll release a DLC costume that has Dante done proper, though, so I'll be waiting for that, because at least his attitude seems proper Dante, roughly.

The environments look really nice, but it definitely looks like a Ninja Theory game. Enslaved wasn't the most complex game out there, but I think they could get away with a simple combat system in a third person shooter/action hybrid.

How downgraded the combat system is is kinda hard to determine. We can't see the button inputs for the combos, how much priority the combos give you, and we can't see the guy botch any dodges yet still have them work. We also can't really be sure about the enemy ai because that seems to be an intro stage and I can see easing into the game for the first level as being a reasonable design decision.

Basically confirmation bias if you think that that video shows that the combat has been dumbed down without doubt I think.

Not to say that isn't warranted because "Ninja Theory"

Dante has three styles of fighting--human, angel, and demon. They were all on display in that video, and they're done by holding R1 and pressing/holding a single button, seemingly. It's been very simplified from DMC3 and DMC4. Also worth noting was how easy it was for whoever was playing to maintain S rank combos. I'm sure for some people it might even look more appealing, but I have a very high standard with DMC, so the more gameplay I see the less enthusiastic I am about the game. I was originally pretty forgiving, too.

Still looks pretty bad. I'd probably be more excited if Ninja Theory had managed to put out a game with combat that wasn't mindless and boring.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but combat is definitely not their thing.

The redesign is annoying but I can overlook that. The gameplay is gonna make or break the game for me.

I think you posted the wrong video because 1. I didn't notice the 3 fighting styles. 2. The highest he got was to A rank and it didn't seem "too easy" at all. He was constantly comboing and not getting hit for a good 45 seconds to get to A-- and while the combos generally only hit one guy, they did mix it up enough that that's about how quick you expect it to be in the other DMC games, even only hitting one guy. (you can hit SSS a lot quicker than that if you're comboing multiple enemies)

I mean I'll take your word for it that a video exhibits the flaws you're saying, for now, but it isn't that one.

Watched part 2

Point stands, just replace "A" with "SS." I dunno, maybe my perception is skewed due to using swordmaster + nevan all the time and being pretty good at not getting smacked, but it's really not that hard to hit SSS in combos if you've got a high enough supply of enemies and they're early game stuff that is easy to avoid, and he didn't even do it! It's possible he was doing it a bit easier than he should've been-- my eye for the variety in the combo might not have been up to par not being familiar with the game, but I know he mixed it up shooting, melees, ground, air a decent amount and pulled different weapons out during the combo, so unless he spammed the same combo 3 or 4 times he should've had no trouble getting to SS.

The main issue there is how easy the combos he was doing are to do. Like, just looking at the amount of flash and hits and variety in the combos, there's nothing really off there with how his style meter was being maintained. The issue for me is, I don't want it to turn into God of War where you just mash X and Dante does a 50 hit combo. Which I can easily see thinking will be the case, but there's not really decisive evidence from that gameplay video that that's going to be the case, yet.

I mean Dante is Dante so it's the cutscenes and stuff are more entertaining as Dante but the game was clearly designed to use the arm and the revving sword.

The styles are based on the weapons--his human style is normal sword attacks, angel glows blue, demon glows red. The axe weapon is a demon attack, the scythe is angel. It's seemingly nowhere near as in-depth as the styles in DMC3 that completely alter your moveset and play style.

My issue with rank was how easy it was to achieve and maintain, regardless of him not getting hit. You definitely had to put into more hits, more combos, and had to keep it up in order to stay. Maybe it's just a press demo, but it looked way too basic for what I expect from DMC. It's not super hard to get S ranks in DMC3, but you have to earn it, and it's why it's so satisfying.

The fact enemies didn't bother to try to come at him is another cause for concern, but it's an intro level and a press build so I'll wait until I can play before saying anything. If someone thinks it looks good and fun, that's cool with me. I'm just less optimistic with each new video. The good news from these videos, at least, is the crazy hitstun seems to toned down. That was automatic dealbreaker kind of stuff before. Totally ruined the smoothness of the combat.

Yeah, Nero was great in DMC4. If the game ended at the end of his story, it would have been better, and then just have Dante as an unlockable character or something. Making you play through the game in reverse with the same enemies was kinda bad. Dante was easy mode, and it kinda showed they didn't originally intend for him to be there. Still fun because Dante's gameplay is tha best, but you know!

I guess I'm the only one who isn't high on the devil bringer. It's cool in concept, but was way too much of a "press this to win" button in DMC4. I'm not too thrilled to see it return in this, unless they reduce its functionality/importance quite a bit.

Eh. I think you're being overly critical of it because you're expecting as much from "Ninja Theory." Like I said I'm fairly certain if you'd done those exact strings of combos in DMC3 (assuming you could, anyway-- I'm just going off of the amount of hits over time, the variety, and not getting hit) you would get S or SS too. As long as there is execution skill in the stuff they were doing and it's not just "hey dial this four button sequence in and Dante auto does this 30 hit combo" it's all good, as long as the enemies pick up in the levels after the first.

Again, there's reason for skepticism but it's hard to really pass judgment on it without seeing button inputs for what he did do, and all the options at your disposal. Was he hammering high style with a bunch of huge combos because it's a tech demo so they had a guy trained to do this, or because they're just trivial to do, that'll be the kicker. The only thing you can concretely get out of that is that the enemy AI was bad, but "first level" and/or "tech demo" can possibly explain that... sooo....
