This is honestly the most embarrassing thing that atheists do. They don't legitimately care about doctors or anyone getting credit, they just want to belittle people.
It is pretty awful. I'm an atheist and I even say "Thank God" and "Bless you" out of reflex. It's so ingrained that it pretty much doesn't even mean anything to most people anymore.

Hmm...
So atheism is a religion all of a sudden. Noted.
You can't be intolerant of something that doesn't exist.

i don't even get the point of getting upset about saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Easter". The actual way that people celebrate holidays today is so removed from the original intent that the religious aspect is almost an afterthought anyway. For Christmas, I'd say a decent number of religious people spend months buying presents, decorating the house, and watching claymation movies and then decide to attend an extra Christmas Eve service at church and put Jesus in a few decorations. It's more or less like an extra birthday, except it's for everybody and there's not cake as often.
christmas was a pagan holiday to begin with, nevermind that, as you said, today it's nothing but an orgy of consumerism. atheists should be all about christmas

This is the second time you have accused me of doing this, and it is the second time I will respond that I don't remember making a post even remotely like that ever. Refresh my memory with some proof. I'm sure that if I said it, it's on L*****FAQs. If you can't provide proof, I'm going to expect an apology from both you and Sess. You for slandering me, Sess for opportunistically leaping at a chance to criticize someone for something they never said.
I thought Christmas is supposed to be meant for all traditions.
And there's nothing wrong with Atheists saying "Happy Holidays" or things similar to that. Just because they don't have certain ideology doesn't mean that they can't wish one for those who do have it.

I've never understood this. It's an overarching term, people. It would be like getting offended if someone told you that you live on Earth, and they complained that you didn't say they lived in the USA.
It's possible that Bio is attributing a post made by someone else to me, or that he misinterpreted some joke post I made years ago, who knows. I'm fully willing to accept the alternative of "I used to be a s***ty person and just wiped it from my memory" but I'm gonna need to see the post first. I certainly went through my dumb teenage angsty atheist phase but that doesn't sound like something I ever would've said at any point in my life.
Yeah, I know how it is when people claim you said something but have nothing to back it up with. Sometimes they go to great lengths such as doctoring images of IM conversations and it's just pathetic and annoying. I shouldn't have jumped on you like that without conclusive evidence.

Same. I say bless you because its polite or something.
since I have already addressed the slander directed at me by biolizard, I'd appreciate if we didn't continue to perpetuate it by looking down on the fictional person who made that fictional post. I know that it is easy to read something and say "I'm glad I'm better than that person" but I hope you all understand why I feel the need to respond. I do not think it is wrong to say "God bless you" or "thank God" under any circumstances.
if biolizard furnishes proof and it turns out I did say it years ago and then forgot, I will personally apologize to everyone in this topic. it is not the kind of behavior that I condone. until then however, please hold your judgment. thank you.
It's easier to label it as a religion on surveys or demographical information, but I wouldn't define it as a religion for anything beyond convenience of filling out a form.
I remember you making a topic about exactly that and me chewing you out for it.
If it wasn't you, it was somebody else. It absolutely did happen. L-FAQs archives don't go back that far.
I mean, we've all said stuff we're ashamed of, dude, so if you do know you said it and are just trying to deny it, please, don't bother and stop trying to make me look bad. If I'm wrong about you posting it, then I apologize, but I know for a fact that topic existed once upon a time.
But you're right that accusing you of this again based solely off of memory without any proof is no good. Understand, though, that I'm not trying to drag your name through the mud, I'm just stating what I perceive as the truth. I apologize for that as well.

In any case I think everyone is in agreement in this topic that that would be a petty and stupid response to that situation.
Isn't that exactly what you demand, sess? Wasn't that the entire point of your (completely bogus now) petition? To have everyone be treated equal regardless of religious beliefs?
Or maybe it's just okay that YOU'RE protected from it. That way you can dish out all the discrimination you want on others.

Actually, I'm an atheist. I'm just saying that atheists will always claim that it is not a religion. When people start talking about tolerating religious beliefs all of a sudden they claim it is one. Can't have your cake and eat it too, sorry.

The only thing all atheists have in common is that they do not believe in deities. That's not enough to be called a religion. Otherwise, we might also say "liking cookies" is a religion.

Atheism obviously isn't an organized religion, but Atheists do have a set of beliefs, in that they believe that there is no god or no gods, they believe that books of scripture are not divinely inspired or influenced by deity, etc.
So there is an argument that Atheism can be called a religion, not in the primary definition, but in a secondary definition.

Wouldn't that be enough to call that a religious belief? I mean, there could be a distinction between saying "I don't believe in a god" or "I believe there is no god", but that's just arguing semantics and the meaning is practically the same.

It doesn't really make any sense to say people should be tolerant of religion, but since atheism is not a religion, you don't have to be tolerant of atheists. Yeah atheism is not a "religion", but it is a belief about religion.
but Atheists do have a set of beliefs, in that they believe that there is no god or no gods, they believe that books of scripture are not divinely inspired or influenced by deity, etc.
That's not a set of beliefs, that's a set of disbeliefs. Saying atheism is a religion because all atheists do not believe in a number of things is nonsensical.

Is there a practical difference between "I don't believe in a deity" and "I believe there is no deity"? Are you arguing that atheism is not a set of beliefs because you and some other atheists may say the former? How about those that say the latter?

Atheism IS a religious belief! And even if it wasn't, not believing in a religion is the way someone chooses to believe.
Religious people: Omg! atheists are so mean to me! Stop it! PETITION! Atheists: Well okay, you have your beliefs and I have mine. Petition signed! Religious people: Okay. HAHAHA OMG YOU BELIEVE NOTHING LULZ
Is this fair? Looks like its the religious ones having their cake and eating it too, to me.

I think you're naive to the point. You're just arguing semantics. It's like people who correct someone every time they say a tomato is a vegetable. Sure it's technically incorrect, but for all intents and purposes beyond elitist technicalities, it's a damn vegetable.
There is a difference between "I don't believe in a deity" and "I believe there is no deity".
The former is agnostic atheism, which the majority of atheists I've encountered are, and I personally do not consider to be a religion.
The later is gnostic atheism, which is where one claims they can be certain there is no god, which I would consider a religion. However, I've never actually ran into one of these in real life >_>.
