it seems like mostly a timing thing

the same low kick can hit the enemy pretty much no matter what they do if you time it right and track them correctly, unless they try to do a low/mid wakeup kick that doesn't really lead into anything from what i can see

my general thought pattern when getting knocked down is to immediately ukemi or roll backwards and proceed to charging mount until they're the one on the ground

hey zfs I know you expressed interest in Brawl

I think even with all the stuff I did to my Wii to be able to play Brawl mods (homebrew channel and all that) I can still go online with vanilla Brawl. looks like it anyway. we should give it a try next time we're playing. I won't be crazy good at it though, mostly I've played Melee in my life.
