DEADLY PREMONITION - oh my god the story/characters/setting of this game is absolutely amazing. 100% hands-down the best main character of any game. Tons of fun side characters and quests, PLUS the combat is decent, definitely not as bad some make it out to be.

We all have a few games that we love that no one else seems to even be remotely interested in, and I wanna know what those games are!

This isn't about games you know are average but you love anyway--these are games you think do something particularly well that people just don't know about, and there's a decent shot that they might like it just as much as you do if they just gave it a chance! These games don't have to be perfect (they probably aren't, honestly) or even obscure, but if you have games that you think aren't appreciated enough for what they do well, post it here!

I'll start off with my own.

If you enjoy (J)RPGs:
Wild ARMs 5 - Probably the best RPG battle system ever. Weak plot, but it's a blast to play through to the very end and has a ton of extra content.
Valkyria Chronicles - So good. VC mixes strategy with real-time combat in a way that just plain works. There are a few unfortunate design choices, but this is a game that shouldn't be missed if you own a PS3.

If you enjoy action games a la DMC and GOW:
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged - A surprisingly competent and fun action game where you get to cut things up as ****ing Wolverine. Bugs and glitches abound, but a game that is totally worth a playthrough or two.

For anyone who likes strategy games, Dofus. It's actually a really good strategy RPG/MMO hybrid; makes you feel like you're playing FFT with a bunch of other people at the same time. The art style is pretty whimsical and unique, which might turn people off at first, but it's really worth a try considering the main area for the first 25~ levels (about a day or two of grinding for your first character, though I can do it in less than two hours with membership now >__>) is free.

As for the other two, probably Valkyria Chronicles and Seiken Densetsu 3. SD3 is so much better than SoM it's not even funny, and VC is pretty much the best game of last gen!

Meh, Wild Arms 5 was like the 2nd worst game in the series to me! If you wanted good gameplay from the series, XF's the one to go for and that outdoes WA5 on story and music too. Any case, mine are:

Yakuza 2 (PS2)
Bionic Commando (PC/PS3/360, the 3D one)
Infamous 2 (PS3)

Mainly because Yakuza 2 nails what the Yakuza series is good at really well, but is better as an introduction than 3-4 because the pacing is a lot faster and delivers on some amazing action and characterization upfront, so it does a great job at getting you invested into the later games.

Bionic Commando was incredibly fun, the swinging system is the most fluid one I've seen in a game and gives you some insane mobility, and the gameplay mixups between shooting, melee, throwing, and taking advantage of your mobility in huge environments just make this gameplay-wise the best third person shooters I've ever played.

And Infamous 2 just seemed to get sorta forgotten due to being an early year release and the late year AAA titles just eclipsed everyone's thoughts on what came out that year. Improved on pretty much every single aspect of the first game.

Elevator Action 2 (Arcade, Saturn import, part of Taito Legends 2 for PS2/Xbox/PC)
It's a simple arcade game that's kind of an action platformer but everything is so detailed and the music is great and everything just feels fun.

Wild Arms 3 (PS2)
This is my Wild Arms pick for this. Really, all these games need more attention. Battles require more strategy than standard RPGs, as every boss fight can turn out to be a wildly different event. Lots of fun puzzles in the dungeons, and of course Michiko Naruke makes amazing music.

Space Invaders Extreme (DS, PSP, XBL)
It uses the basic Space Invaders formula where they come down and you can move just left or right, but everything is amped up to a ridiculous level. Invaders will barrage you with bullets, move in waves and circles and change colors and fire lasers. You can fight back with just as much crazy stuff, huge spread shots and giant lasers that eliminate many columns at a time. All the while the background is swirling like a crazy acid trip, and every sound effect is timed to the music (similar to how Rez does it), making everything a very rhythmic experience that pushes you along. It was really unexpectedly fun and addicting.

Dynasty Tactics (PS2)

For fans of the Three Kingdoms universe who want to be a strategist rather than a (dynasty) warrior, but with more focus on the battles and less on development micromanaging than the RTK series. Had a disappointing sequel, but the original is (as you may have guessed by my use of the word disappointing a moment ago) a much better game, one of my absolute favourite games ever. The gameplay is spot on, the map is great fun to explore, and the storyline is surprisingly good - lots of branching story paths with "what if" scenarios ahoy (what if Sun Ce didn't die, what if Cao Cao and Yuan Shao had a peace treaty, what if Liu Bei actually seized Jing, etc.).

Cannot recommend it highly enough to fans of a) turn-based strategy games; b) the three kingdoms world; and particularly c) both of the above.

Planescape Torment

I've given this multiple tries since I can really dig a good narrative, but it was always frustrating. I don't remember why but I spent hours in the mortuary without knowing where to go.

When I left I spent hours talking to everyone in town so I would know where to go. Then I must've followed some guy or something and ended up in a dungeon of sorts and I was killed right there on the spot.

Then I just picked something up and everyone came at me with torches and I was killed there on the spot.

...I get that non-linearity is a good thing, but I really have trouble with games like this. If I were to really play it I'd need B8 to keep telling me exactly where to go and what to do.

I'm too cool to care about what others play or don't play

1) Etrian Odyssey 3. this one didn't require much thought; it's got some great tracks in it, a great atmosphere, and really is an immersive game with you having to draw the map. it's much better than the other two (which says a lot as both are damn good) and actually makes exploring not just the dungeon but the seas incredibly fun because you really do get the feel of being an adventurer. you don't know your way around necessarily, and it gets more complex, dangerous, and difficult. very, very fun stuff. a lot of people would be turned off due to the difficulty and first person view, but it really works out nicely for the series.

2) Sengoku Rance. this was a hard one to guess down.... fate/stay night's been played quite a bit, but the two that really stand out of the VN genre different than the rest are Sengoku Rance and Big Bang Age. it's not that VNs aren't in other srpgs (they're in plenty), but full on eroge in a pair of games that are great is... very rare to find. multiple routes and stories to play with. it's also very easy to get into, and though most probably would hate Rance initially, and at times during the game, he's one of those guys who's a notably flawed character that's actually not a terrible person despite some of his actions. it's a very intereting game but also a very fun and addicting one because the gameplay, though simple, is just plain fun. main reason i picked this over Big Bang Age is because it's easier to get into. BBA has a much more mainstream lead who's a good guy (instead of rance's being just "a guy"), but you can very, very easily get overwhelmed with all the micromanagement you have to do and the number of options. if you are a big fan of strategy games then BBA may actually be the recommended one instead. but for most, i'd go with Rance because it's just easier, both to get into and to play.

3) ...augh. this is tough. if Ys 7 had a PC release already i'd say that, but since it doesn't i'll go with Ys: Oath of Felghana. has a release on steam! it's a very good introduction to the Ys series in its modern form - not running into your enemies but playing like an action/rpg. it fields a similar engine as ys 6, but is an overall better game than it simply due to being more consistent and structured. it's a full blown remake of Ys 3 to the levels beyond Zero Mission to Metroid 1 so don't let that detract you - it's pretty much an entirely brand new game, just with the same general story. and a ton better. one of the best PSP games and though the PC version doesn't have as much content (came out much earlier), it's still worth playing because you get full screen deliciousness out of it.



4th woulda been Aquaria. because everyone should play that too. thing is, a sizable portion probably has, or has it in their steam list, because it was in a humble bundle.

1) Final Fantasy III. Specifically the NES version. It seems a lot of people here played the terrible DS remake and consider "Final Fantasy III" to be one of the worst games in the series because of it, which is a shame since the original is pretty easily my favorite RPG on the NES and rests solidly around the middle of my personal FF rankings.

2) The King of Fighters XI or XIII. The former is just criminally ignored, while some people (*cough*) dismiss the latter because of how awful XII was. Also, the latter is my favorite fighting game of the generation, and the former is my favorite fighting game of all time.

3) Mother. This board generally seems to love Earthbound and Mother 3, so why not? Yeah, there's a bit too much grinding, but that's what frame sk- er, perfectly legal ways of getting through battles faster are for.
