Dark Souls (Watch some videos, you'll probably be able to tell if it's something you want or not. If it is, you'll love it. Demon Souls would be good too, I'd assume, but I don't have a PS3 myself.)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Mass Effect 2
Fallout: New Vegas
Saints Row 2/3
Red Dead Redemption
Dead Rising 2
Assassin's Creed 2
Super Street Fighter 4 AE
Portal 2 (And the Orange Box if you can't run Half-Life 2/Portal)
Alpha Protocol
Hard Corps: Uprising (PSN)

Would suggest you not get LoD or Heavy Rain.

As far as actual PS3 games...

MGS4 is good. Very good. But it definitely isn't for everyone and you should be aware that its online is closing its doors next month, a little-known but very disappointing fact.

The Uncharted series, apart from the first entry, is almost hard to dislike. The first gets a lot of flack for how repetitive and unnecessarily lengthy its shooting bouts are and it deserves all the criticism it can get for that but it's still enjoyable. The second and (from what I can tell from previews and player reception...) third fix all that and have great online.

Assassin's Creed is another good series whose first entry suffers. This time it's just horrible repetition at work but the second game and on fix that for the most part.

Get Mass Effect 1-3 for 360 and not PS3. You are missing content otherwise. Including the entire first game which contrary to popular B8 belief does not in fact suck, just skip the side missions if you find them off-putting. This is the best new series of the generation, controversial ending be damned.

Sonic Generations is quite fun but not as lengthy as I like as far as sixty-dollar games are concerned. The good news is that it's significantly cheaper now and well worth the price.

FFXIII is not worth playing but for $15 I suppose there might easily be enough content in there to lead you to think otherwise. The battle system and most of the music are both solid and the characters aren't horrible. The plot is terrible.

Red Dead Redemption is quite good if you like open-worlders.

Skyrim is excellent as well but best on PC. If that's an option then take it. If not then get it for 360.

Dark Souls is great if you want a hard time and a moderately engrossing world. I emphasize the hard time though, that's kinda the draw.

Get Tales of Vesperia for 360 and Tales of Graces f for PS3 if you like that series. So far I haven't really gotten into it (I hated Symphonia...) but these sound like two really well-received entries, so yeah.

Valkyria Chronicles is pretty good but not the godsend Board 8 seems to think. It's only a godsend in a generation practically devoid of decent JRPGs. It isn't... the second coming.

Nier looks good. I haven't played it.

If you read the first post you would know he doesn't have a 360.

But if you have a good PC I would recommend getting the Mass Effect series on there instead because missing out on the first game is bad.

FFXIII has a system in which you see enemies on the map but the movement to battle isn't completely fluid. It is quite quick though.

Anyway, it's very fast-paced which is enjoyable. You set up quick burst-like rounds of several attacks and then your character commits to them while you choose what to do next. There are also six job class-esque things and each of your party members gains access to a few, and they each have their own distinct little edge to each one and you can choose them on the fly, in battle.

It's pretty neat overall. The progression system is like a step back from the Sphere Grid though and again, the narrative isn't especially enjoyable. One of the weaker entries in the series in that regard, for sure. Some of the characters are decent though.

forgot about that game, but its still probably too expensive right now.

I realized I had 6 bucks left in my paypal account so I bought the first uncharted game for 10 bucks from the fairly sketchy ebay seller.

I probably will get MGS 4 too.

I probably have room in my budget for one more $20 or so game after that, and that should hold me over for a while

This is accurate, but it's worth noting that you'll have to slog through some hours (forget how many. Thinking sixish.) of having your jobs locked, and having the gameplay being mostly mindless and boring.

The amount of time and money they spent building XIII's engine practically demanded a cheaper follow-up.

I wouldn't strictly say it's necessary because there isn't a lot that happens in UC1 that carries over into future games, but you'd probably get confused on some of the references and the history between the characters. The original is worth a play, and it's pretty short anyway.

From: masterplum | #020
Hmmmm

what are the battle mechanics like in XIII?

FFXIII's battle system is ATB like most of the series, but your characters each have different "roles" they can use. Each character starts with three (out of a total of six, and no character has the same three beginning roles), but you can unlock the other three so all characters can use all six later in the game. Here are the six roles:

Commando - The straight up damage dealer physical attacker.
Ravager - The role for using offensive magic spells (also FFXIII has no MP, so you can use spells as much as you want)
Sentinel - Used for defense, learns abilities that greatly reduce damage and protects the party
Medic - Healer person, learns Cure stuff and Esuna stuff
Synergist - Uses party buffs, like Haste, Protect, Shell, etc.
Saboteur - Inflicts status anomalies on enemies like Blind, Poison, etc.

You can switch between roles at any time in a battle, so FFXIII's battles require a bit more strategy than most other games in the series. The leveling system is pretty similar to FFX's. Each party member has a Crystarium (think of a Sphere Grid, kind of), and after each battle you earn CP (Crystarium Points), and you can use those points to get stat boosts and learn abilities.

So yeah, lots of fun.

But I still like that kind of system.

Then you'll probably prefer the sequel, Dark Souls. Demon's Souls, while enormous and amazing, is a little more... is confined the right word for it? Guided? I don't know. But Dark Souls is a little more open ended.

But they both involve you dying a lot.

XIII's story is not boring in any way. It's just bad. Subtle, but important, distinction.

On the actual topic, I'm not sure what I can add. Um...

Demon's Souls and its "sequel", Dark Souls, have already been mentioned. Those are two of my favorite games.

Oh, Catherine is pretty awesome if you are into awesome music, style, a mature plot, and addicting puzzle-based block pushing action!

Also there's a bunch of HD collections of PS2 games and some gems on PSN like God Hand and three of the PS2 SMT games IIRC.
