1. What a coward. Does anyone really believe he was against gay marriage in 08?

2. Goodbye Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, and Florida. He basically just convinced all of the Bush Evangelicals to get out and vote for a Mormon. Congrats.

Lots of evangelicals in Iowa. And yeah, Democrats are sorely mistaken if the believe the polls that supposedly show 50% of Americans support gay marriage. If that were really the case, the record on state ballots wouldn't be 31 to 0 or whatever it is.

Iowa voted for Gore in '00, too. Iowa's voted Dem in every election since '88 except 2004, and that was because John Kerry instilled as much energy in the democratic party as a wet mop.

Obama needed something to convince Liberals to come out and vote for him. Republicans are angry and are always angry, so there's no question that they'll be out to vote Romney in droves. But Liberals are disenchanted and need a helluva push to come out again like they did in 2008.

Smart move, I'd say.

It's not that people will change their minds that will change the outcome. It's that the GOP is going to rally a TON of conservatives to hit the polls for this. There will be churches all over rallying their congregations to vote against Obama. This is seriously going to turn out the religious conservatives in droves.

Didn't vote for Obama =/= voted for McCain

The reason why McCain couldn't hold onto the Bush states was because a very large percentage of Bush's evangelical base didn't bother to vote in '08

What people don't seem to get is that convincing people to vote in elections is about 35% swinging independents, and 65% getting the people who will only vote Dem/Rep to actually show up. The amount of people who are actually up in the air about whether to choose Obama or Romney won't care about this, because anyone who really cares about gay marriage as an issue, enough to make it a voting point, has already picked a side. The only possible way this would hurt Obama is if there are people out there who this convinces to vote in '12 that didn't vote in '08, and that number significantly outnumbers the people who this convinces to vote for Obama in '12 that didn't vote in '08.

It's simple algebra.

Listen to people who are actually astute about political opinion--like me, who booked it that Prop 8 would pass when everyone else here was too delusional to realize it.

This issue is going to effectively destroy Obama in NC and VA, which only leaves a few more states Romney needs to pull off the upset.

Actually, yes, that's exactly people's response. When things are bad, they pick on people weaker than themselves. That's why you see all the calls from lower middle class (not really middle class anymore) people to treat the poor badly. Because they can't win a fight with the rich, so they'll pick a fight with the poor instead.

I don't see why you singled me out when I haven't argued the morality of this at all. I'm not even American, I pity you from a country to the north where gay people have been able to marry for quite some time now, so I'm not invested in this at all. I just think it's a good political move, which... you seem to agree with me on, at least in that it's a political move.

NC was probably a gimme, but VA was always in play. The bigger deal is the GIGANTIC evangelical population in Ohio (the one that carried Santorum to victory there), and to a slightly lesser extent, Florida (but Marco Rubio will help him take that one).

It is most certainly a political move. Obama was kind of in a no-win situation.

If he reaffirms his previous position, he will anger a lot of his liberal base.
If he says nothing, it's the same as saying he still opposes gay marriage, and his base will become even more apathetic about his reelection.

From: GaryOak151 | #025
I think you guys are underestimating how much money Obama will raise off htis

Most of his top supporters were already gay or gay rights activists. This won't change that much $wise.

On the other hand, conservatives will be emptying their pockets all over Romney to make sure their opposition to gay marriage is known.

Obama's best shot is probably to double down on Ohio. But even if he wins Ohio, Romney can still win the election by taking 2 out of 3 of: Iowa, New Hampshire, and New Mexico. Obama's probably lost in Florida already because the demographic shift that's taken place there since the 2000 election. It's not a state of retired New Yorkers anymore. Similarly, don't think Nevada or Colorado will be in play- the dynamics of 2008 are gone, and even better, there are significant Mormon populations in both states.

Meanwhile, even if those plans don't work, Romney has other potential leads in Oregon, Minnesota/Wisconsin, and maybe even Massachusetts/Maine. MA did elect him as governor, after all.

One important thing is demographic change. If Romney takes the same states Bush took in 2000, he'd get 285 electoral votes now compared to Bush's 271. Romney is getting 2-3 small states free compared to 2000, basically.

The last time North Carolina changed their constitution was to ban interracial marriage, which to this day is still banned by their constitution. Nothing that comes out of that state is remotely relevant.

Well, the problem is that gay marriage wasn't a huge issue during the 2008 campaign. If it becomes one, then it's possible that they can rally even more evangelical voters that otherwise stayed home in 2008.

It's not so much "Obama losing votes to Romney" as it is "Romney getting more evangelical voters to come out." Assuming that's the way it goes. It could also energize Obama's apathetic liberal voters, too.

My church is evangelical, and people don't vote as myopically as people think. Lots of evangelicals voted for Obama in 2008 because of the economy, or because they wanted to end the Iraq war, or because they didn't trust Sarah Palin with the office of the presidency. So one, there is the rallying effect of increasing turnout, and two, you may also convince some people to change sides.

Partially blind faith in my state, but Iowa's been trending blue for a while now. Romney is not exactly palatable for the republicans in the state, we're a state where a vast majority of the high-population areas are incredibly liberal, and the low-population areas are filled with farmers and other land workers who aren't thrilled with Mitt Romney's business background. Plus, we've had gay marriage for long enough that people are starting to realize that it's not actually hurting anything. This won't change enough opinions to make a difference.

Plus "only 54%" means winning by a minimum of 8 points, which isn't exactly a small margin.
