This topic. I ask myself this all the time.

Wrestling has zero appeal to me, and never has.

You know what I don't get? Why people who don't like wrestling always make a point to say they "don't get it." Like the conversation hasn't been beaten to death already.

I can name plenty of random popular hobbies that have just as many weird things to nitpick as wrestling does, and I almost never hear people say "wow I don't get that!" for anything else with any regularity.

Honestly if the acting was good I don't think I'd enjoy it as much. It's the over the top cheesy "they are really saying this with a straight face" part of wrestling that appeals to me.

at first i thought your response was really dumb, but honestly when I think about it, you are right on with that.

I guess the acting that I will never think is "good because its cheesy" is some of the actual wrestling.

The most recent time I watched wrestling (Cody Rhodes lived right down the street from me when we were in high school, and I saw an ad for a weeks episode of monday night WWE or something), the way the wrestlers would be pinned for like 3 seconds, wobble a small bit, and then the one trying to pin the other would just fall off. It was pretty painful to watch.

I do believe if it wasn't something you were into when you were a kid you probably won't be into it later in life

I could possibly count as an exception to this.

I never watched a second of it until I was 10 years old. Granted, that's still "a kid," but I knew from day one that it wasn't "real." Still hooked instantly.

I don't see what part of "I like cheesy things that take themselves seriously because that's hilarious" is dumb. It's not exactly a concept that applies only to wrestling. But yeah, I agree that the wrestling itself has some terrible acting, which is part of the charm. It's great to see something that makes absolutely no sense and having the commentators try to take it seriously.

hey now, it doesn't ALWAYS have to be cheesy. it can just plain be bizarre or hilarious (Cody).

though we do also have guys like Punk who you can never tell if he's doing something scripted or just shooting. and with the whole 'reality era' we have going a lot of stuff will remain scripted, but the mic stuff is looser.

being scripted mostly refers to the winner, loser, the promos, and some spots in a match usually, however that tends to be arranged in the ring in real-time usually. the promos are getting looser now and focusing more on improv with a theme or specifics that can or can't be okay'd. wins and losses will 100% be scripted. the stuff that goes on during a match though isn't really "fake" in the sense of they dont' get hurt. for a recent and unusual example, cena didn't really "fake" getting his ass kicked by Brock Lesnar, he did. some shots do specifically need to be delivered hard, and there's obviously no way to fake falling 20 feet on a guy - you can avoid the impact being what it's viewed as, but you can't avoid a 200 pound man + gravity, or a bunch of repeated sharp kicks to the head.

It doesn't have to be cheesy as hell, but I love it the most when it's cheesy. That's why Kane's storylines are the best. As for the "reality era" I sort of hate that. It's like trying to do away with the cheesy elements and be like "Oooh was this part of the script or am I going off it?" and that's...boring to me.

I say my big sell for storylines and interviews is usually cheese.

I definitely don't like matches because they "look cheesy" though. I don't think most matches (plenty of matches have botches so I'm not saying this is anywhere near 100% or anything) actually look bad when compared to stuff like hollywood fight scenes or anything. I think most people that think they do look significantly worse in that regard are just trying way too hard to pick it apart rather than just trying to enjoy it.

it's like theatre but with a lot more violence

if you like theatre you'll probably like wrestling!

Unless you like theatre for good acting and scripts. Then you will hate it.

But if you just want good stage combat than yeah you'll love wrestling.

I'm also of the crowd that would not watch if it were real. I don't watch UFC or Boxing because of the violence. I don't even like the big hardcore wrestling matches (especially pre-PG ERA); I don't want to see a guy blade or get legit hit in the head with a collapsing trash can or chair, I don't want to see a guy fall 20 feet onto thin padding, or get hit with glass and thumbtacks. That is what doesn't appeal to me.

I generally don't like random mindless blading violence, but if there's a long feud and they totally hate each other in the storyline, it can be used to enhance the story.

I'm usually the type that squirms at the sight of blood or a bad twisted ankle or something, so I'm kinda surprised that I'm okay with it if the feud needs it.
