At least tiny states like Rhode Island are known for their tininess, and barren states like Montana/Wyoming/the Dakotas are known for their small populations and beautiful outdoors.

West Virginia... help me out here guys.

Yes, because Mexico is bigger and more recognizable than Virginia. If we made a 51st state called New Venezuela, I guarantee that it would soon be more recognizable than West Virginia despite the more difficult spelling.

The Cornhuskers are one of the most well known college sports teams in the country. West Virginia has the... Mountaineers, which could be anything from a college team to their national guard - I'd never heard of em until this topic.

Ah yep, that's true. West Virginia has coal mines, but the connection isn't as strongly embedded in the national ethos as corn for Nebraska or potatoes for Idaho.

Also, I think a part of the problem is West Virginia's disassociation with other states. Plucky Rhode Island may be smaller in mass and population, but at least it's part of New England. Kentucky is part of the South/Bible Belt. Kansas and Nebraska make up the heartland. West Virginia... is what

West Virgina played an actual pivotal role in our countrys history, as did Nebraska to an extraordinarily limited extent.

The answer here is Idaho.

Potatoes and...nothing else.

2nd place goes to Utah but well Mormons.

3rd goes to North Dakota.

"The heartland" is used by people in the Northeast and West Coast to honor the rural, small-town, heart of America while still excluding the South. Though for 95% of people using the term, this isn't intentional.

Also, Leon, Charleston instantly makes people think of South Carolina. As it should, because Charleston, South Carolina has always been a bigger and more important city than Charleston, (West) Virginia. When you think of Charleston, you think of the antebellum South and events like the 1860 Democratic National Convention......like stuff in Gone with the Wind!

Kentucky actually has the exact same problem. Before 1860 it was clearly part of the South and it's below the Mason-Dixon line. But then those states didn't secede (at least according to Northern textbooks), so are they still part of the South or what?

However, as is the general rule in the law of contracts, perhaps we should say that this is no one's fault but the people of West Virginia. They voluntarily chose to secede from Virginia, and they should have foreseen that 150 years later it would leave their descendants in limbo without a region to be connected to in the national ethos.

I think it would be better not to be known for anything than to be known for this.

But you're basically saying it's better to be known for having nothing than not to be known for anything.

Being known and recognized is one way to define "consequential." I think West Virginia is the most inconsequential state because despite its out-populating like a dozen other states, it still seems to be known and discussed the least. It has no sports teams. It has no large, recognizable cities. It is not immediately connected to anything either remarkable or mundane - not beaches or rolling valleys or politics or big sky or corn. It is not even immediately recognized as part of the four major US geographic regions. Is it a Southern state or a Midwestern state? Who is the most famous West Virginian alive today? In history?

There's nothing going for this poor state. Its biggest claim to fame is literally the "Virginia" after West. That's the only thing that keeps it lingering on like a wisp in America's consciousness. If it had a different name not associated with any other state, it would be even less consequential, a baffling realization.
