So I have asked this board for some music recs before... Once was about 4 years ago and it went fantastically, showing me some bands who are still among my favourite groups today. I mean some of those albums became the soundtrack to my life in the next years and there are some seasons that I associate with those albums. All in all, great stuff and I thank you all for that. The other time (last year) went terribly and I'm not sure I listened to any of the albums more than once.

Well it's another summer, and it's time for me to try this again. The rules are simple. You only get one artist, and you can either post three select songs, or one album that I will listen to and then talk about. I'd honestly prefer if you just gave the me songs (you can also post less if you'd like), but I understand that some artists require an entire album for you "get it" and sometimes even a collection of singles isn't enough to give you a good picture of their overall sound.

I will only take 25 artists before closing suggestions.

If you name an artist that I already know or have listened to extensively, I'll just let you know and you can name another.

Here is my last.fm to give you an idea of what I'm into... although I can honestly say that genre isn't really an issue at all.

http://www.last.fm/user/thundersheep

Oh yeah, and ratings. No number ratings because I think they're stupid, but detailed writeups will be given.

Done with the first rec, here it is.

Adam Lambert - Trespassing (Mer)

I didn’t dig the title track much at all. I can’t stand stomp-clap rhythms , and I had pretty muh made my mind on the track before the vocals even came in. Listening through it got a bit better with the vocals, but I still didn’t enjoy the track much. A very different story with the second track. I was hooked by the groove pretty much instantly. This is the kind of pop that I love. It hits harder than a lot of club tracks I hear from house producers, and I’m not sure that I would be opposed to actually playing this track myself. Another really minor thing I love about the track is the way he says “Walk that walk like you don’t give a ****”. There is something I enjoy about how some people can drop f-bombs without making it sound dirty or forced. I think Lana Del Ray does the same thing in a few places on her album.

The next few songs bring the funk, and then there is another dud from Pharrell… "Kickin’ In". I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed his productions, and despite what everyone thinks about The Neptunes, I’m not feeling it. I have nothing good to say about that track, so I won’t say anything at all. It gets back on track with the next song though.

...did he just say “Iceberg, just the tip” Damn. Literally had to rewind there.

The latter half of the album really slows things down. Not necessarily a bad thing, but out of the slower tracks, I think “Outlaws of Love” is the only one I really enjoy. The rest were just “alright”.

All things considered, a decent album. It didn’t blow me away, mostly due to the fact that I really don’t like either of the Pharrell produced tracks… I think the tracks produced by Josh Abraham and Oligee are the stars of the album and it was definitely a pleasant listen, although I’m not sure that I would listen to it start to finish again… I’d be more inclined to just listen to my favourite tracks.

I just realized that I basically did an album review for the fist rec rather than talking about the artist which was the original plan. I won't be talking in depth about tracks from here on out.

Hot Chip (CasanovaZelos)

Hot Chip is one of those bands that I already knew I was into, yet I was too lazy to actually check out their stuff. I knew they were vaguely electronic since a lot of people who are into dance music love them, but there are a lot more "real" instruments in their music than I was expecting. I didn't really sit there and watch the music videos the whole way through, but I glanced at them here and there and I enjoy the fact that the group doesn't seem to take themselves too seriously, which I definitely appreciate, because nothing is that serious.

Overall, I'm not crazy about the music, but I enjoy it. Maybe it's just the tracks you chose, but they don't seem to go hard enough in either way to really grab me. The more upbeat tracks aren't quite enough to really get me moving, and the slower one wasn't really emotional enough to get me to feel anything. I mean it's decent music, great even if we're talking about "Ready for the Floor" but nothing I'm crazy about. If they have more tracks with the energy and groove of Ready for the Floor I could really see myself getting into this band.

---Ben Folds Five
--
As much as I want to have you listen all the way through 'Whatever and Ever, Amen', there are some really great songs on their other 2 albums. For this reason and since you prefer it, I'll just give ya the three song sampler.

"One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" from Whatever and Ever, Amen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrWSkQMWlAY

"The Last Polka" from Ben Folds Five [self-titled]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUT_CP6WoK4

"Narcolepsy" from The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYkfdl5Wm5o

These are some of their more intense songs, so I think they'll be good for a first impression. Their body of work covers a lot of ground, genre-wise, so I can give you a better variety of recommendations if you like what you hear so far.

Now some of you may look at this list and wonder why I skipped some people... I didn't skip anyone, and I made a list as the artists were suggested. Some people chose not to read the first post and I just ignored their posts until they corrected their mistakes. So I'm doing these in the order that were received, or should I say, accepted.

Com Truise - Cyanide Sisters EP (Nee)

I'll start by saying I hate the name. I really, really hate it. There is nothing clever or funny about taking a famous figure and switching the first sounds in each part of the name. I know there are a lot of other groups who have done this, but thankfully I can't remember the name of any of them.. except for a semi-popular Russian electro producer named Mord Fustang who kind of blew up last year. Yeah, the name sucks... but fortunately, the music does not.

I wish I could differentiate between the different tracks here, but none of them stand out enough for me to want to check the track names as I listen to the EP (on the third playthrough right now). I guess I understand what people are saying when they listen to my trance mixes now. It's good enough that I just want to have it on in the background, but I don't feel the need to actually dedicate my attention to it. Furthermore, it doesn't sound like music I should be listening to indoors at all. Literally every track makes me think of the same image, driving through a city at night at about 20 mph. Specifically in a car that looks like this, in the year 1985.

external image

I'm definitely going to keep this EP on my phone (which is a bigger honour than you might think) just in case I ever find myself in that situation and I need some music to complete the experience. If the rest of Com Truise (ugh) sounds similar to this, they'll probably find themselves in a few of my playlists.
