I think I've beaten the game twice, and I used the same characters for the most part in both playthroughs.. I don't think the game is like FE7 where it's easy to use different characters.. or is it?

Ike solo run? Any ideas?

I finished a random run a while ago that was a lot of fun. You just create a random sequence every chapter and those numbers are the indexes of the characters you can bring to that chapter. The enemies are not super hard so it's surprisingly manageable, especially since the prepromotes you get are not that bad.

I haven't played 9, but in 7 and 8 I used all magic characters in at least one run. You could also do a no reset mode (if they die they're dead).

Ike only is there, but it's pretty easy, since Ike is broken as hell.

I did Ike+Laguz only, but that's much better in Radiant Dawn.

No restart is always nice (better in Hard, since this game isn't particularly evil even in Hard).
Ike solo is really easy.

Ike solo runs into the same problem of most solos, which is that it's a combination of dullness (moving one units isn't very strategic) and the horribleness of that part in Ch. 17 where Ike has to carry Leanne and gets his stats halved.

Some run ideas:

No restarts
Rest run (Units must take a chapter off for every chapter they participate in)
Females only (not that hard if you can clear the early chapters with just Titania)
Bad units run (Bastion! Geoffrey! Tanith!)
No buying items (I have no clue how hard this would be, though I suppose the late-game could basically be an Ike solo)
No staves

Have to second this!

Anyway, the big challenge run I've done for this game is, for every chapter, to use only the lowest-levelled PCs available. Everyone must be recruited and nobody must die (to make your character pool as wide as possible), and no overusing Ike/other forced characters. Pretty much the FE equivalent of a low-level game. I also banned stat boosters and BExp but that was just me being quirky and isn't really necessary. Fairly challenging, unlike most FE9 runs.

I don't think the game is like FE7 where it's easy to use different characters.. or is it?

Why wouldn't it be easy to use different characters? You mostly use the same group until Chapter 11 or so but after that the game opens up.

Have you tried a Fixed Growths run? That could be fun.

Tanith and Geoffrey are bad relative to most units in the game. FE9 is rather short on genuinely bad characters.

Pretty much the FE equivalent of a low-level game.

The FE equivalent of a low-level game is to hack it and do a zero-growths run. Now THAT is hard.

Tanith probably has the best skill in the game by far.

Geoffrey is a Paladin and has Paragon so he's better than a lot of characters by default.

Lucia, Devdan, Bastian, Sothe, Shinon and Ena might be a better start in the "bad units" department.

Tanith is one of the best characters in the game. All the mounted/flying humans are, really, except Haar and maybe Geoffrey. I would say Geoffrey is still in the upper half though.

Haar is still pretty good IMO. Not FE10-good but has solid stats and movement. Both him and Geoffrey have more going for them than characters that join earlier but don't dominate the game with movement as much.

Elincia is probably the worst of the bunch.

One of my traditional FE "challenges" is a no reset run. Make a mistake? Deal with it. Someone dies? Carry on without. Lose your Lord? Playthrough failed.

I've also done what I think of as a prepromoted unit run, although that's not quite accurate; usually I also allow myself to use Thieves/Dancers/Lords as long as they aren't promoted. Note that in FE9, Laguz are also legit - they count as promoted units for experience purposes, after all.

I did this with FE8 once. Really fun, and worth a shot.

For FE9 in particular, I think a Direct/Order run might be interesting. Remember how the game gives you the option to have Ike give you units orders by just pointing them somewhere instead of moving them yourself, and how that option is completely pointless? It might be interesting to try it out for a run.
