I think the real disaster will be next year when Sony and MS demo games that the Wii U simply can't play.

Yeah this is my main concern about the WiiU, that it'll just be a Wii-esque situation where Nintendo is a gen "behind" again. I'm just not convinced on the third party support, either, since the majority of what we've seen are just ports of PS3/360 games, which doesn't exactly scream commitment to me.

this is Nintendo's one year to shine. maybe an overreaction, but at this point I think it would take a Sony or MS bomb -- like pricing the thing way too high or making a system that would cost an impossible amount to develop for -- in order for Nintendo to really thrive. they needed to come out ahead and stay there and it looks like they'll have Pikmin and 2d Mario. great.

Nice Eurogamer article about Microsoft vs. Sony conferences. They have a liking for Sony here, and put a negative spin on Microsoft's entertainment focus, but the overall point that MS has moved on from Sony is a good one.

"That's Microsoft and Sony out of the way, then, and in immediate hindsight it's tempting to say that they opted for the same approach overall. Both conferences were relatively conservative affairs compared to the pageantry and showboating of previous years (apparently you don't know what you've got with a space poncho until it's gone), as both companies presumably played the strongest hand they could muster while keeping a lot in reserve for the inevitable unveiling of next-generation consoles in 2013. However, upon closer inspection there were a number of stark contrasts."

That's true for the US market, but overall, the two are basically equals in terms of consoles sold, with the slight advantage to Microsoft. I think it's accurate that Microsoft is putting less emphasis on gaming versus entertainment. You can probably throw Nintendo into the mix, too. The Wii sold more than the 360, but I'm sure the 720 will be going for bigger competition.

so the 720 is basically going to start out as this gigantic super multimedia entertainment complex with social media intergration and will start off like the PS3 did this gen as a console overloaded with features?

I'm honestly starting to see the Xbox more as a Movie or TV shows on demand streaming device.

I'm sure I'll love NintendoLand. I played Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort more than any other games in their respective release years.

I just hope it's not sold as a full-priced standalone game.
