Although to be honest, I don't hate FFX-2 like many people seem to. I do actually like the game, believe it or not.

I view it in the same light as I do with Apollo Justice in regard to the rest of the Ace Attorney series, I guess. It has its moments where it's good, but it's inconsistent and manages to horribly botch some of the most beloved aspects of its predecessor.

Turn-based battle systems are the best. ATB is alright, but I'm not really big on it. Best thing about FFX is the nice battle system, actually!

Indeed.

FFX is like the only game in the series where I consider random battles more than a necessary formality. Part of the reason it's the best! FFXIII would be the other, I suppose. Haven't played XIII-2 yet.

FFX's battle system is pretty fun all the time. Whoo, switching characters around on the fly all the time

Why don't more games do this?

XIII-2 is a better realized version of XIII, and it does encounters better.

That reminds me, can you switch out party members in the middle of the fight in FF X?

Because in my last playthrough, I completely forgot how you do that, or if you can even do that. Am I misremembering things?

FFX is probably the best FF battle system. Love turn-based battles, one of the reasons Dragon Quest is so good!

I do need to finish Dragon Quest VIII one of these days. Someone told me I'm close to the halfway point where there's some infamously hard boss fight or something, but I haven't played the game in like two years.

One of the trigger buttons. Not sure which one it is off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure the game has a tutorial battle where they FORCE you to switch characters, so I'm not sure how you missed this!

DQVIII so good. That's one of the top 3 games from last gen, such a good experience. You should definitely finish it.

DQ8 was all right from what I played, but I don't favor old school RPGs as much as you do. I mean, I didn't put it down because I didn't like it or something. I just...put it down.

I mean, this is definitely true, but a game has different responsibilities than other mediums.

I think it did very interesting things with the genre, even with the ineffective sequel story to FFX.

Would it have been better if the story was based on new material? Definitely. But then again they probably really wanted to save development time and cost by reusing the engine. In that case I would have recommended new characters completely, but alas.

Responsibilities, sure, but there are some games I really do play and find myself almost (or, rarely, just as) enthralled by their storytelling capabilities as any good book I've read, and so forth. In FFX's case, I'd go just about that far, at least with certain key elements therein. So when X-2 arrived and really flubbed those aspects, it felt to me like that book analogy, even though I'd certainly agree with you that overall the game industry has other principle priorities and oftentimes for good reason.

Yeah, I'm not saying you can't judge a game based on whatever criteria you want.

But I guess it's like the whole Melee and Brawl thing.
Depending on why you like a game will direct how well you take it's changes.

Not that the reception between X and X-2 is anything near as divisive...

Sounds right to me. I like Brawl, and I'm willing to accept that a plethora of Smash fans will tell me that I like it for all the wrong reasons.

FFIX has the worst battle system of that era. I enjoy the way the game does abilities, but that's about the only strong suit it's got going for it compared to the others.

Not to get into too deep an argument here, but Melee's singleplayer content is way more compelling for me than Brawl's, particularly where targest test and event matches are concerned.

Although then again, Smash has never had singleplayer that was all that good. Nothing in Melee's singleplayer really sticks out other than what I mentioned, though it sucks that Brawl butchered those.

Let it be known, however, that I'd sooner say that Brawl is better than Melee than I'd say Brawl is a bad game.

What's so great about Melee single-player?

The fact that almost anything can be done co-op automatically makes Brawl's better.

Okay, I've beaten Metal Gear Solid and completely agree with everything Leonhart said about the game. I definitely want to play through the rest of the series (at least the core four MGS installments).

I'm not saying Melee has a better single-player mode! I'm just saying there are reasons to play it! Plus, there was that All-Star Mode where you had to beat everyone without dying. That was pretty cool.
