Eh, I can understand hating the PSX version between the botched localization, horrible load times, and world map and such, but there really isn't anything wrong with the PSP version besides the soundtrack being rescored to appeal to the pathetic idiot hipster P3/4 fans and it not redrawing the character portraits despite being them being ugly and poorly drawn compared to later work (particularly Mark ew even black Mark is better).
Range/aoe system is kind of annoying at times too since certain character/persona combos might have trouble hitting some formations of enemies, but with the PSP version showing the aoe before attacks makes it a nonissue for the most part.

Once you finish P3P and Devil Survivor 2 you should play Digital Devil Saga 1&2 and Nocturne. Don't know after that since my P1 copy quit working and it wasn't very fun anyways. I couldn't get into Strange Journey at all and I haven't gotten around to playing Devil Summoner 1&2 yet. My DS2 is still in the box with the Raihou plush.
I played through maybe half of the main story (so not even 1/4 of the total game, ha) and it just seemed....boring. The mechanics were either bland or straight up bad (card fusion, that awful grid system, demon negotiation), the difficulty swung wildly back and forth (of course I was somehow able to get a Megido spell that nukes the entire enemy party for massive damage incredibly early on), and the dungeon design was confusing.
It's just...not that great.
The music is pretty good though, at least in the PSP version.
IIRC P1P rescored most of the soundtrack, with a shorter track list and shorter songs to cut down on the load times and in a more jpop style over more moody/atmospheric songs to appeal to p3/p4 fans which gives the entire game a completely different feeling.

vs.
now I haven't played my PSX copy and I don't really care about the changes (aside from it looping a bit too often), but it was a huge deal when the port was announced since the soundtrack was the main thing (only?) people liked about the PSX version
ISP retained most of its soundtrack because people complained about P1P's soundtrack changes.

I'd say it's more because the original is outdated, that intro and battle theme are way under quality of what any of the SMT series have been since Nocturne. If they're going to remake a soundtrack, it'd make the most sense to do so in the distinctive style of their most successful and recent games in the same series which likewise have the largest fanbase. Better differentiates Persona subseries from the SMT main series or other subseries.

I have no idea who you are, but I thank you for arousing me. - Beruga Brawl FC: 3823-8243-5663
From: Some_Character | #015 You can fit DDS in pretty much everywhere, so I suggest those. The bonus boss of DDS1 isn't nearly as awesome without playing Nocturne first, though~!
