Rules: - Rate from 0.1 to 10 (one decimal places is fine, more than that and I'll round for you). I'd prefer if 5 were an average rather than 7. - Unless a specific version is stated, rate the best version that you have played on games released on multiple platforms - You may vote for any games you want that have been rated before at any time. You may also change your vote at any time. - No alts, no joke voting, no purposeful downvoting - you all know this. - Please only vote if you've played enough of the game to be able to rate it. - You may nominate as many games as you want on any given day. Previous Game's Performance: 59. The World Ends With You (8.323 / 60 votes) 60. World of Goo (8.323 / 21 votes) 61. VVVVVV (8.287 / 33 votes) 62. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (8.264 / 59 votes) 63. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (8.251 / 29 votes)
I want to rate this higher, but a lot of me is thinking more about how well it works with The Lost Age. The two are basically halves of one incredible game.
Still excellent.

Golden Sun's always been really divisive in my experience. To me it's just really, really average. Not something I'll probably ever replay, but not downright offensively bad.

I hope you'd at least agree that the dialogue and story are downright offensively bad!

They're pretty bad. And I generally play do play RPGs for their stories. I have seen far worse though. Looking back on things most people typically seem to think had at least average scripts, like Kingdom Hearts and Tales of Symphonia, I can't say Golden Sun's really agitated me much.

Offensively bad seems like a little bit of a stretch. It isn't, say, Star Ocean 4 bad.
Camelot's pretty good at writing scripts, but the bigger problem is that there's just so damn much of it. The lack of character development doesn't help either.
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I feel that a big part of GS's positive reputation (the first game; TLA is a huge step up) is that it was one of the first new GBA RPGs in a sea of ports.

That's definitely the impression I generally got around that time as well. That's not to say there weren't true fans of the game. Obviously, they're here tonight. But mostly, it was just celebrations that the GBA got an original JRPG.

Flawed, but it's a game I really enjoy anyway, albeit nowhere near as much as its sequel. Really wish dialogue was somewhat skippable though, and the random encounters weren't quite as frequent. I've played through multiple times and though I still don't mind most of the dialogue, some of it is just plain way too long, particularly before the few bosses that might be able to take you down.
I was going on vacation, and I needed a new handheld to keep me busy on the ride up and back, so I got the F-Zero GBA game. I didn't like it much, so halfway there, we stopped and I got another one, Golden Sun. I got so into it at the time that I didn't want to do any of the fun stuff once we got there!
Looking back, it wasn't all that I had made it out to be, but back then it was amazing.
