Eh, RT is pretty hard on horror films anyway. Not sure what you'd expect. I did enjoy Blair Witch and RT didn't much like it (though a little more than this one). I am still somewhat interested in seeing it, but only if the circumstances line up to do so. Rings is out in less than a month anyway.

Depending on how my next weekend looks, I may try to check out Bye Bye Man. Maybe. But I mean, I expect it to kind of suck.

I kind of accept that all critics dump on horror movies though. Were there any in the past year they didn't critically pan, even if they were pretty solid?

Also, even though Rings has some of the best trailers like that nursery rhyme one, I anticipate it will suck. You don't delay a film like they did and expect it to come out well.

Actually last year was one of the best in recent memory for horror films, nearly all the mainstream titles plus the indie hits received at least 60% or higher I believe.

The only ones I can think that got good ratings were Don't Breathe and I think The Shallows.

The Conjuring 2: 80%
Lights Out: 76%
Ouija: Origin of Evil: 82%
10 Cloverfield Lane: 90%
Green Room: 90%
The Neon Demon: 57%

Even stuff like 31 and The Purge: Election Year did decently well. Overall it was a healthy year for horror.

Yeah, critics *can* be a bit hard on horror (Orphan not being "fresh" is an example, to me), but some slip too easily into clichés (jump scares, pedestrian twists) that they've seen a million times, so I get it. Also, it's called "The Bye Bye Man". It's going to suck. (I'm beginning to wonder if we'll ever get a legitimate Slenderman feature film at this point, or if it peaked with Marble Hornets)

EDIT - also, "The VVitch", which I found interesting but unintentionally funny, got 91%.

Don't Breathe got 87%, which is spot on imo. I almost picked that over 10 Cloverfield Lane for best horror film of the year. (those 2 and Green Room are all right at the top)

Awesome. Japanese ghost stories are the best. I remember seeing a Kabuki reenactment of a similar 'vengeful ghost' story on a looped video at a local museum a couple years ago. Love stuff like that.

uhhhh....yeah

Kwaidan was interesting - a bit slow at times, as one might expect from a classic film totaling over 3 hours in length, but I loved the aesthetic of it - the Edo (or even pre-Edo) period settings and costumes, with vibrant colors and detailed sets - it's beautiful to look at. Each of the four stories, while unique in their own right, deal with spirits in one form or another. I liked the first two the most as I'm pretty partial to tales of female ghosts, but the latter two still have plenty to offer and give a more robust picture of Japanese lore. Probably the best moment is the Psycho-type reveal at the end of the first tale, predictable as it may be (you can see the ending to the second tale coming from even further away). The main character quickly aging to his death after horrifically discovering he's far too late to return to his ex-wife is a nice touch, and was perhaps meant to convey that the regret would haunt him till death.

I started watching Onibaba to continue my classic J-horror kick, but I've been sick and both times I tried starting it it was late at night and I passed out, only to awake towards the end and see some fucked up shit. So, though I have not much a clue what's going on, it's already kinda freakin' me out. Pretty sure last night I had a nightmare about it, I'm not positive if I was awake or asleep ha.
